I have only one thing to say on this matter, so I'll keep it simple.

Don't try to compromise, that only makes it worse.

Either disregard the canon where you don't care for it or follow it without changing your conclusions based on fanon.

Basically if anyone still wants to use Derpy as Dinky's mom they should just ignore Sparkler altogether. Stupid explanations on that matter are possibly the worst thing you can do.

Also, it's far more stupid to think Derpy can't be Dinky's mom just because Dinky has a sister figure, biological or otherwise.

@TinTwit

Why does it need to be? It's the fanon you enjoy here, so why do you care?

I see this as something that no longer fits into into anything closely following canon. It's like all of the Cupcakes stuff in that regard.

Just because it doesn't really fit in with the canon doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. It just means that when you make stupid explanations for how it could some people will get annoyed.

@639337 - But...but..but Dinky and Sparkler as sisters is such a cute idea! No really, it is! And it has done NOTHING to change my opinion on the relationship between Derpy and Dinky. In fact, I'd love to see MORE interaction between the 3, not less. >:(

I disagree. I think it fits just fine into the canon. Dinky having a sister figure does not mean Derpy can't be her mother; that's a huge stretch, far more an assumption than anything else.

@MyLittleJosieph

Well then you can enjoy them separately, can't you?

@TinTwit

Your referral to her as a "sister figure" is the problem. It smells of you using your fanon to alter the simpler conclusions.

Saying that Derpy is probably too young to be her mother isn't really a stretch at all, she was in a competition that required her to be young, and she actually got focused on by the "camera" for a few moments. This is likely being truer to reality then a flashback scene in a crowd, which is after all only a memory and one where she was just crowd filler.

You're not making the concept better by trying to fit it with canon this way.

I'm not altering anything. Dinky was always an only-child in fanon, and Sparkler stepping in to allow Dinky to participate in the Sisterhooves Social isn't a stretch either.

Basically, to put it simply...

I enjoy what doesn't try to strictly fit canon at all and that which does.

When the two are mixed however....

Well it just doesn't function as something enjoyable.

It both compromises the artists vision and still doesn't satisfactorily fit near the canon. So don't try or else you will actually be RUINING Derpy/Dinky far more then the relation being implausible in canon would've.

@TinTwit

What you're altering is how you come to conclusions.

The obvious conclusion is that Dinky and Sparkler are sisters. Only ones Fanon allows one to come to that conclusions.

You're making your vision worse with the compromise. You don't actually have find a way it still fits, because fitting with the canon was never the appeal of the idea. Trying to find ways it could just detracts from it.

To you, maybe it doesn't. But to me it fits perfectly well. No alterations, no stretching, nothing. It fits perfectly fine. And it doesn't ruin the dynamic at all.

Just because my conclusion differs from yours does not mean I'm altering anything.

@639410 - Of course. I would need literal confirmation from the show itself (or absolute Word of God) that Dinky isn't Derpy's daughter in order to accept it (like Dinky attending a "Bring Your Daughter to Work Day" episode in which her mother isn't Derpy...but Sparkler is due to nopony on the team paying attention to background filler continuity), not some contrived "Oh noes, she has a sister so Derpy can't be her mother! *rage*" reaction which is completely overblown.

@TinTwit

So you're saying your conclusion isn't produced by fanon?

I'm sure it doesn't RUIN the dynamic, but it just makes things ugly when you try to fit it.

It looks better on its own without compromise and is more likely to be accepted then with said compromise.

Basically as a "Canon Nazi" I'm saying I'm merely asking for you to keep Derpy/Dinky enjoyable for everyone and just ignore the canon altogether and tell the story you want to tell.

Derpy/Dinky is better off without said changes.

We can easily incorporate the latest episode into fanon. It's not a huge stretch of the imagination that Sparkler is a surrogate sister or a step-sister or a half-sister. In fact, I think it adds a new layer of depth.

Derpy as a retard is widely accepted fanon
Derpy as non-retard is widely accepted fanon

Derpy as mother is widely accepted fanon
Derpy as non-mother is (potentially) widely accepted fanon

Problems?
