The way I see it:
Dinky and Sparklet = sisters Derpy Hooves = step-sister/sister-in-law/older friend/cousin I don't think Derpy would be old enough to have a child anyway. |

@King_Maverick Why? It's not all the fans agree on fanon anyway so why change it, especially since fans can just simply explain a way around it? There's also the fact that these are background characters and do not have and never truly will have canon, and any "canon" that had is subject to change at a moments notice. |

Because I'm being told by a lot of other people in other pony boards that I shouldn't be clinging onto to this anymore and that I should just let this part of the fanon burn so that we can build on its ashes a new fanon, ie: Sparkler/Dinky. Also, I'm just tired of fighting and arguing over canon vs. fanon... |

This is easy enough to explain in context of Derpy being Dinky's mother if you want to. It's easy enough to explain in a different context if you don't.
I prefer Derpy with The Doctor and with Carrot Top, but YMMV. |

It's a great start. Seeing as how it has been made I can finally start lowering my hostility to the old fanon.
Attention was placed on the matter and something good came of it. And perhaps further good will grow out of it. I'm just glad that there's something to give the idea attention that doesn't require keeping up several day long arguments now. I salute you! Arguing was getting boring anyhow. |

I remember a comment from another pic here earlier, someone was disappointed that Bon Bon wasn't standing next to Lyra/HS in the stands and that it didn't make sense to him/her.
Nothing is wrong with fandom interpretations. Nothing at all. Just stop expecting to see it in the actual show. It just leads to alot of disappointment that detracts from the show itself. |

I don't see why Sparkler being Dinky's sister would prevent Derpy from being her mother. We don't know how old Sparkler is, and we do know that Derpy is a good bit older than the mane 6, since she was an adult when Twilight was a child.
I'm all for letting canon supersede fanon, but that's not really the case here. People are jumping to conclusions. |

Background ponies have no official backstories or names. They exist only for technical reason and their designs are chosen to blend into the background.
In other words, these characters have no "canon" to defend. Unless Dinky runs up to a pony besides Derpy and calls her "mom" on the show, there is no reason to argue against the Dinky/Derpy fanon. It's just as valid as any other interpretation. |

Just want to point something out to everyone, we've seen in the show that Derpy does indeed hangout with Carrot Top, and while the sad fics where her filly are taken away may be less appropriate now she still knows a young filly she can care deeply for.
Just that filly living with Carrot Top and Derpy looks different and has a different name, and... Hmm... That probably sounds painful to some people... I suppose that's just the downside of this. Still, you can still work out how Carrot Top, her sister and Derpy get along. For all you know her parents are dead and Derpy helps Carrot Top take care of her little sister. I apologize if that idea makes anything worse, but it's something. And I feel it might be interesting in the right hands. |

Sweetie and Applejack entered the Social together and they're not related.
Thus we can't be sure that ANY of the "sisters" are related. The competition clearly isn't about blood ties but about close emotional bonds. |

It seemed pretty clear that what they were doing was considered unusual. I'm sure that this doesn't prevent Derpy from being used in emotionally touching fanon, nor from helping to care for a filly. Where old opportunities close, new ones open. They'll just take a lot of getting used to... |

She got more focus in those scenes then in the flashbacks. And yes, she has been cloned a bit too much, like every other background pony. I just think people should take the time being to diverge from their old concepts and experiment with new ideas and how well they work out. If they don't... Well then they don't, but at least they were tried. |

Nothing about background ponies beyond appearance is canon. As far as canon is concerned, Dinky is just scenery.
I'm personally not abandoning such a sweet mother-daughter relationship because of a few seconds of background. |

Sparkler is Derpy’s sister, not Dinky’s. Derpy was injured on the day of the Sisterhooves Social and couldn’t compete. Dinky was very sad about this so Sparkler offered to take Derpy’s place. |

Wow...despite the verdict from on high, STILL bronies refuse to accept canon over fanon. Who knows, maybe if all this fanon nonsense had never existed, they would have made Derpy-Dinky as canon. No show has ever made fanon into canon. Accept it. |

@639248 - Right, because without fanon, there would still be a canon derpy-eyed Derpy. I have the feeling the production team has something special in mind for Derpy and Dinky. It still boggles me that the sudden unveiling of an older sister for Dinky is treated as canon proof that Derpy can't possibly be her mother. That's terrible jump in logic. |
