each race tends to have it's own language from their homelands.
earth ponies use this, unicorns use those strange glyphs, pegassi are... undetermined, and english is an informal middle ground. most ponies are taught all of them in school. |

@787: Easy. "Modern" English is a dead language, known only to scholars and the princesses. Thus why Twilight wanted to have the banner read in that language... and why other ponies wouldn't think to account for all the letters in Celestia's name, leading to the "Princess Celest" incident. |
