Why do people hate the fannon today? A lot of fun in watching these shows was to make up a story involving the background characters. Back in the g1 era, the characters where so bland you really didn't care about what hasbro gave you to work with, you just made up your own. I always found it fun to try and make up stories about the characters using the few times we see them in the background, even if there is no real continuity or plans with them. |

No one hates the fanon. In fact I'm one of the people who supports it burning and has done so for some time, and I LOVE the fanon.
Because of this I can't ignore the possibility that it'll devolve into a pile of stuff that has cut off all ties to the show. If that means that the occasional piece has to be excised to maintain its basis in the show then so be it. We want the fanon to "burn" because we care. |

Fanon is just for kicks for me honestly, I don't disregard canon because that would just be silly. Though I think people are overstating the reaction towards this whole Dinky/Derpy issue. So far I've seen people non vitrolic towards eachother in disscussing it. Save for the people saying people "discussing fanon are retarded and should kill themselves".
But regardless you cannot deny that Background ponies are something important to the fans no matter how inane it sounds. |

yeah. I can understand how some people get too attached to there own stories. It sort of reminds me like how writers often get attached to there own characters. To me, it's the show first-and making up random stuff second. I personally find it amazing that I want to know more about the world and the inhabitants of My little pony, and that i've made my own theories about it. I haven't felt that way about any show in a long, long time. |

Then I like you as our opinions match! I don't think anyone hates fanon so much as they hate those who don't want to let it change. To them it just seems obvious that the show comes first and that to insist otherwise is an insult. I would say the fact that they want the fanon to "burn" just shows how deeply they care for it. What they're really saying is that they don't want the fanon sailing off in the wrong direction. Or at least that's more or less what I meant. |

same annon as 634714 here. Yeah. I think it's just that there's so many fans of the shows, and people take it to differing extreams. Some can't handle the idea of change--I for one am not a fan of 'heartstrings' as a first name or 'Golden harvest' as anything other then what Carrot top calls herself to sound sophisticated. Still, things change-and it's with change that things usually get a lot more interesting. I'm sure a lot of good fanfics might come out from this episode alone. |
