That still raises some questions Like who is the father? Are Sparkle, Noi, and Dinky all descendant from a single father? I mean, Derpy and Carrot Top are room mates. Who's to say they housed a colt in the place a few years ago. But then again, Sparkle looks to be a young adult so that means Derpy had her very early because both their ages look near to each other or... I'm just looking too deep into this.

I find it funny that all of these good-faith attempts to combined fanon with canon keep getting derailed by anons with sticks up their asses. Not SURPRISING, but funny. Also, since Sweetie Belle and Applejack pretty clearly were not related, it doesn't seem like the contest was that rigid about the rules in the first place. And I personally like the "Dinky entered with a volunteer from Big Brothers Big Sisters" idea, anyways.

It's like River Song in the newest Season of Doctor Who, she's older than her own mother. I believe Derpy must've had this daughter (not Dinky) in the past, so that now she's just as old as Derpy, but still Dinky's sister. Or Dinky just doesn't have a sister and obviously couldn't run the race with her mom.

Vree: Derpy is seen as an adult when Twilight Sparkle was a filly, so it's entirely possible that Sparkler/Seafoam/Whatever her name is is Twilight Sparkle's age while Derpy's an older mare. That said, Derpy was also seen as a filly in the same flashback, so time travel and time paradoxes might be involved.

You know, for those who want to merge the canon and the fanon (assuming you don't just go with lookalikes and there is more than one unicorn with Dinky's body-type) it could be a half-sister. Dinky and other unicorn having different mothers. Grimdark Theory: The father was a Black Widower and killed the elder Unicorn's mother, and tried to kill Derpy, but only managed to give her derp-eyes instead.

Paladin: I want that fanfic written.... We also have no idea how pony genetic's work. Rarity's mother is pink. Swettie Belle and rarity are not pink. Granny smith is green,but the three grandchildren aren't. It's entirely possible that a pony's colors are entirely random, or generational.(Big mac, applejack and applebloom have close colors, as well as Rarity and sweetie Belle.)

If fandom HAS to explain this (and of course we have to explain EVERY little thing even if it doesn't matter), then I'd rather go with something along the lines of a Big Brothers/Big Sisters type program. Or Dinky felt left out, so Sparkler stepped in. ^_^ There are so many ways to explain it without saying Sparkler is Derpy's other daughter. Or, people could just realize that it's just something the animators did, either without realizing, to save time, etc, and it isn't really relevant, but where's the fun in that? ;)

I agree Trot. so far, I can see these as the following explanations: 1)Dinky's apart of the Big brother/Big sister program. 2)Sparkler is Dinky's sister. 3), Sparkler is Dinky's step sister via adoption/marrage 4), Time travel shinanigins(Derpy's daughter from the past/future, Dinky's future/past/alternate timeline self) 5)Sparkler is a friend who took Dinky to this competition

they are all officer Jennies, relatives inexplicably similar to each other. there are sets of Dinkies and Ditzies who go into situations whenever the context calls for someone doing something interesting in the background. One Ditzy(our derpy) in particular gained individuality due to the derped eyes however, and she is the mother of one Dinky in particular, though we can't really tell which since they all look alike. Welp or not, I dunno i got nothin. I just want to keep having Dinky/Derpy mother daughter thing, the comics and art and stories are just so heartwearming and high in quality compared to most fan content.

MY ALMIGHTY THEORY: Dinky is actually her own mother, Ditzy, through a magical accident that clones her and sends that clone back in time as a pegasus. Her 'sister' here is actually her clone's (Ditzy) sister who grew up with her in the past. Dinky's father is a sorcerer who needed to make sense of the time loop and so banged the Dinky clone to produce Ditzy... I mean Dinky. Carrot Top shares a house with Ditzy and Dinky, but has a sister who is secretly her daughter but only she and Ditzy know about this. Carrot Top is planning to use her daughter, through training since birth, to plant the seeds of dissent as a prophesied messiah child and overthrow the Princesses in what she has dubbed Operation Golden Harvest On an unrelated note, Scootaloo is Rainbow Dash's daughter through a pervy flight instructor during RD's teenage years. And, if it wasn't obvious before, Twilight Sparkle went back in time several thousand years and caught the eye of an alicorn prince, who took her in as a consort and fathered (much to Twilight's horror) Celestia and Luna. Shortly after the births of the Princesses, Twilight managed to get back to her own time.

now that's just really silly. I mean if your gonna do fanon ya gotta be more solid. Like maybe something involving the sorta accepted Derpy as Doctor Whooves' assistant thing. Perhaps her time travel debacles leave her with an inconsistent chronology or something (explaining the multiple background duplicates, as well as her being an adult in Twilight's filly flashback, yet still being in the best YOUNG flyers competition with a suspiciously young sounding hourglass stallion). Or maybe Sparkler being a future daughter of Derpy who became Whooves's new assistant later on, visiting Derpy and Dinky in the past or something. Meh its all really baseless speculation anyway. I just don't want the Dinky/Derpy mother daughter thing to die >_>.

Does anyone remember Ned Flanders for Simpsons, he's actually aged around the 50s-60s yet he appears to be in the 30s only beacause he trained his body right with good excercise and a healthy diet. Derpy could have done the same and that's one fanon idea. After looking at Rarity's mom, she doesn't seem to be that old either, only her hair makes it look like she's older than Rarity, but if you change or get rid of her hair, she looks just like any other background pony. So basically there's no way to tell who's old or not without looking at their hairstyle. Now that I think about it, it's also hard to tell how old Cheerlie is too from the way she looks like. The only reason we got the idea she might be an older adult is because she show her class what she looked like in the past. tl;dr short second fanon version: So in conclusion, Derpy can still have another daughter maybe even a third because we have no idea how old she really is especially if we look at Cheerlie and Rarity's mother as an example. They would look like every other pony if it wasn't for Cheerlie telling her class and Rarity's mother's hairstyle. In the end though this is my way of justifying Dinky having an older sister and how Derpy can still be her same age.

Personally, I believe Sparkler is actually Derpy's sister, and they wanted to compete in the Sisterhooves Social, but since it Filly/Mare teams are the only ones allowed, Derpy let Dinky participate with Sparkler. That, or I'll just ignore the fact those two happened to be paired up with each other.

How I worked it out in my headcanoned was that Sparkler is Dinky's role-model. Dinky being a unicorn had a lot of questions about herself that Derpy or Carrot Top couldn't very well know about, namely magic. So she sought out other Unicorns who might know about such things. This eventually led her to Sparkler, who originally humored the filly trying to make a good impression on her new neighbors. Eventually though Sparkler began to see Dinky more like a little sister than the neighbor filly from next door. So when the Sisterhooves Social came around Dinky really wanted to go but she didn't really have a sister and she could very well ask Derpy or Carrot to take her, so Sparkler stepped up to take her instead.

My preferred theory to reconcile this is that Sparkler is the sister of Dinky's father... younger sister, so for Dinky she fills the role of "the fun/eccentric aunt". Derpy was busy with work, so obviously Dinky turned to Sparkler for the social.

My headcanon is that Equestria has its own equivalent of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. Dinky, coming from a single-parent household, signed up for the program and ran the race with one of the kind-hearted souls who work with such organizations.
