...

I'm not saying the toys are more canon then the show...

But they definitely outrank fanon.

That is to say that it's more true that Celestia is pink then to say that she is actually bright green with pigeons for eyes.

Heartstrings is simply a more canon name then Lyra.

I would like to point out that the whole Lyra name changing debate is baseless, because of a simple flaw. Everyone here IMPLIES that the pony is, in fact Lyra. The figurine itself can not be used as the argument to prove the connection, because of: a) the base model is one of the "stock" ones, and they are only recolored; b) the coloration only RESEMBLES Lyra, while not essentially having to BE her. I woud like to point out here, that the logical process everyone shows is Figurine -> Pony in show. (due to how they look alike) while, in fact, the proper connection is Figurine -> Picture -> Show. Let's follow this line and concentrate on the first chain. Is the figurine in the package the pony on the picture? There's no point in arguing over this, the package contains a turquoise unicorn with a lyre cutie mark. The difference in coloration can be probably explained by technological processes on production part, which I am not able to describe, because of my lack of knowledge in this matter. The 2D art, especially the MLP style is easily recolorable, while the 3D figurines are more prone to errors in production, other manipulation. I'm going to draw a parallel to another toy (which everyone insists to be legit and accurate), the Celestia toy, sometimes referred to as Pinklestia. The point is simple - the toys aren't accurate to the show, while their depictions are. Now, what we had proven, is that the picture on the package is the picture of the figurine, and that is how it would look in show. Which leads to the second part. Is the picture on the bag connected to the pony in the series. Even disregarding the obvious recolor of Twilight, there is a fundamental problem. The coat color. It is hard to pass the show color and the picture as one. I would also like to point out that the wikia is now fighting against itself - taken from top of the page "Coat - Very light turquoise". Very light turquoise indeed. To the point. It is the picture on the package that is show-accurate, while at the same time being not show-accurate. Contradiction, anyone? This disproves thesis of Heartstrings toy = "Lyra" pony. I am open to discussion with arguments based on , as someone already posted on wiki "reliable sources". On another, not connected to the argument above, note: lyre cutie mark is fairly common and it is not unreasonable for (purely hypothetically) a dark turquoise unicorn with lyre CM to exist in Equestria. Everyone jumped and concluded it has to be Lyra.

Based on this logic, the "fluttershy" they made wasnt the one we all know and is a different pony just because the manestyle is different. They only have a few molds and theyre not going to spend money on new ones when they can recolor the mane 6 ones just as easily. I accept these new names, but only because I dont see what all of the butthurt is about...

@ SirPayne, anon 804 here.
Yes, it would seem so, however, in Fluttershy case, you actually have her called by name. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but I noted the obvious Twilight recolor, and the same is with Fluttershy's Rainbow Dash(?) base. Even taking into account the different mane due to stocks, you are still left with coat color problem

I'm surprised nobody's drawn anything of Heartstrings' "canon" personality as a singer.

Ugh... toys are toys, background ponies are background ponies.

Just had to mention this, as I remember a similar situation to this, Hasbro has precedent for renaming character toys who are clearly original characters from an earlier series in Transformers. Mostly because somewhere along the line they lost the rights to those names.
As the fanon basically named all of these, we can't really expect them to spend extra just so their boxes have the same name we came up with.
Until they specifically call them by name in the show, I'd just consider this a means to an end to make famous background character toys for you all to buy and call them by their real names.

And what evidence do you have that says they don't have surnames?
Even if Pinkie made it all up it shows they are aware of the existance of surnames. What's more, what is your excuse for Mr and Mrs Cake?

@297: Well, all the blindbags sharded the same mold...even one with their own art such as Cheerilee and Fluttershy. Fluttershy was SUPPOSED to her own mold, but the folks at McD had a very hard time making her model or something...Anyways, the design are used so they're one and the same, but that doesn't mean you can stop calling them by their old name...of course you already knew that. :P

What.

The toys seem to reference the show, though. And not just in color scheme and cutie marks. The personalities appear to reflect some of the fanon ideas about the character.
"Sings all day." => The fanon considers Lyra to be a musician and some musicians to like vocals.
"loves berries." => Hasbro can't put "loves booze." on a children's toy and berries match her cutie mark. (Though I guess though could have used grape juice...)
"is so helpful." => I don't know what Blues's fanon personality is, but he is seen helping out during the Winter Wrap-up.
"loves sharing treats." => "I emptied your fridge"

And a lot of the differences between the toy/character card and the show are potentially excusable. The cutie marks being different could be simple mistakes, depending on the time constraints the designers were under and the quality of reference material.

They of course would never use Fanon names, as there is no way they would be able to secure the trademarks and/or copyrights. And lack of secure trademarks is why Lauren had to change the main cast from their prototypes into the ponies we love today.

Berry Punch's expy using Rarity's mold is rather strange. I personally think Pinkie's mold would have been a better fit, as it's of an Earth Pony and the hair style is kinda similar. Though maybe by the time they got around to designing Berry's toy, they had filled all of the available Pinkie mold spots. ("Okay. The new line of toys are finished. We had to make some compromises, but the bronies should love the references to their beloved background ponies...wait a moment...we're one short. Hmmm. We need something that can use a Rarity mold." "How about Berry Punch?" "Isn't she an Earth Pony though?" "Yeah, but the bronies are likely to ignore anything we make that doesn't conform to their fanon anyway." "I suppose so...")

Not sure why Lyra's expy is off-color. Maybe someone figured seafoam green is more expensive. Or maybe it ran into the same problem Pinklestia did, i.e. enough of their customers disliked the coloration (And remember you are not a customer of Hasbro unless you own a toy store)

Though maybe the 'accidents' aren't accidents at all. Maybe Hasbro anticipated a flame war and schism caused by differences they had to have (like the names) and made the changes in hopes that it would give enough leeway that people could comfortably ignore the toys if the so wished and by doing so lessen the severity of the clash in the fanbase. If this is the reason, then whether or not it was the wise choice has yet to be seen.

Hasbro isn't stupid. They've been selling toys to retails for years and own numerous subsidiaries. They know what they're doing. It just looks like they do stupid stuff, because people forget some important points (Like the fact that their customers are the retail stores, not the common person)

Also to those saying the toy canon doesn't matter, while I agree the show canon trumps the toy canon, Hasbro owns the IP. They can force the show creators to do things, and they HAVE before, namely Celestia being a princess instead of a queen (I've heard that Hasbro forced them to include Cherilee, just without telling them how to include her, but I can't find the source of that)

Now that I'm done rambling (for now), I generally like the names, and personally combine them with the fanon Names as surnames (or in middle Carrot's case, Golden Carrot Harvest) though I'm not sure what to do with BerryPunch/Berryshine namewise.

@Flaskgrag In olden times, Professional singers that aren't a part of band played instruments as they sang (at least in popular fantasy settings, and MLP is a popular fantasy setting) The iconic instrument is a mandolin, though a lyre could work as it's portable and can be played while singing.

Why do people care this much? Considering toy Celestia is pink, why can't toy Carrot Top/Golden Harvest have bands around her carrots and still be the same pony? The toys are never 100% accurate...

But anyway, why get all upset over the whole thing? People, just call the ponies by whichever names you prefer; after all, there's such a thing as a nickname.
