The one thing that fans always wanted Hasbro to do, and it still caused controversy. :( |
| Anonymous #626933 8 months ago |
Honestly I see people at this point disregarding the names and continuing with the fanon names |
| Anonymous #626937 8 months ago |
Starts as "fun", becomes "desperately defended fanon" inside a month.
Nipping this in the bud until someone integrates EVERY SINGLE TOY. |
| AdrianBrony #626940 8 months ago |
geez. I know. new names come out, some people toy around with trying to make them line up for funsies, and all the sudden people are all "no name changes, canon/fanon only, final destination." |
| Imdumb #626951 8 months ago |
Canon > Fanon
If they call her Heartstrings on the show, will I still call her Lyra? Hell no, I won't. |
| Anonymous #626954 8 months ago |
@Imdumb
But if she appears as a Twilight recolor, would she still be Lyra? Hell no, she won't |
| Anonymous #626957 8 months ago |
Only time will tell... |
| Imdumb #626958 8 months ago |
@954
The point is, I wouldn't worry about it either way since she is just a recolor in the toys, and in the show, just a random background pony who probably won't ever have an important role. |
| Anonymous #626959 8 months ago |
We're adaptive and creative and I'd like to think, if we've learned anything fromt he show, tolerant. Is it alright that I think the name "Lyra Heartstrings" actually sounds pretty nice? I'd like to think so. |
| Anonymous #626960 8 months ago |
#626954 My God you're a fucking retard obviously Hasbro is not going to make specialized art for every background pony for a line of toys they really don't give a shit about, seriously the argument that these aren't the background ponies because of the art on the fucking cards is the most contrived excuse I've ever heard. |
| Anonymous #626961 8 months ago |
Guys Just because the Toys have names doesn't mean it's canon... Seriously |
| marioandsonic #626962 8 months ago |
Here's my take on the four new names
As others have suggested, I don't mind making Lyra's last name Heartstrings. I think it has a nice ring to it. Sort of like what we did with Tom Dan. Berryshine would be okay (and kinda hilarious, since fanon usually depicts her as an alcoholic), but there's one problem: Berry Punch is an earth pony, while Berryshine is a unicorn, so they can't really be the same pony. Noteworthy...eh, I'm not really a fan of Blues, so it doesn't really matter to me. Golden Harvest is the only one I really don't like. I'm still going to call her Carrot Top. Anyway, that's my two cents. Now I'll close this post with an excellent one made by a brony on EqD: "This is the same thing that Transformers fans have been dealing with for years. Hasbro chooses toy names based on if they can get a trademark or not, and sometimes this leads to toys having different names then the same character in the show. For example, Hot Rod is always called Rodimus in the toys, or Jazz is always called Autobot Jazz. So even if they wanted to go with fan names (assuming the toy division even knows them), they may not have the name available or they may not consider the name distinct enough to get a trademark on it. Here's an article on Tfwiki about issues with trademarks and toy names. http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Trademark " |

Umm... I never said that. I never suggested anything like that. |
| Anonymous #626972 8 months ago |
@626960 Why do keep mention the art as if the toy itself isn't a Twilight recolor? |
| Anonymous #626973 8 months ago |
Ponies do not traditionally have surnames. Hence, this is retarded. Some ponies appear to have two names. But considering the "Apple family" doesn't actually have SINGLE CANON NAME ENDING IN APPLE, they clearly do not maintain surnames. |
| marioandsonic #626975 8 months ago |
What that post means is that sometimes, a character in the show will be called X, while the character for the toy line will be called Y.
So I don't really see this becoming canon, unless the show officially calls these characters by their toy line names. |

@ 973: Mr and Mrs. Cake? |
| Anonymous #627018 8 months ago |
Oh my god Heartstrings is sooo hot and Berry Shine is so smexy...Think of the official names as nicknames.Like for say 'Yo Lyra my Heartstrings hows it going biyotch'. |
| Anonymous #627033 8 months ago |
Tenchi: "Apple" "Family".
The most family-oriented characters on the show do not even use the family name as a surname once. They're thematic. Considering we've only seen them eat raw produce, sandwiches, and metric fucktons of desserts, two ponies both happening to have "Cake" in their name doesn't seem that unusual. If you find "Mr. and Mrs. Cake" to be proof of surnames, what's the Apple Family's surname? |
| Monkey_Zombie #627038 8 months ago |
Live by the examples of the ponies. love and tolerate. |
| OzarkBrony #627041 8 months ago |
@anon973 Uh... "Pinkamena Diane Pie", Twilight being called "Miss Sparkle", "Cup Cake" and Carrot Cake". Need I go on?
@marioandsonic Here's a great example. The pink Earth Pony with the green mane and a daisy cutie mark is explicitly called "Daisy" in the show, but her blind bag toy was called "Flower Wishes". Guess which name the fans went with. Long story short, I think 90+% of the fandom has decided to just keep using the fanon names, maybe try and integrate the toy names if need be ("Lyra Heartstrings" sounds pretty cool I think), until only such time as when/if the TV show itself uses different names. |
| Fuzzy_Logic #627044 8 months ago |
The people making something (movies, games, cartoons, books, whatever) cannot draw from fanfiction in any noticeable way. They typically are forbidden from reading such things because of this.
The second a group comes up with fanon for something, that same fanon can *never* be official. Hasbro can *never* use the fan names for the background characters because they've become engrained in all sorts of fanfiction and fanart. They can't take from that. They just cannot. In fact, if people start going "They could call her Lyra Heartstrings!", that name, too, would become an impossibility. |
| TenchiFreak5 #627047 8 months ago |
Don't know.
Doesn't really matter, though, because not knowing what it is doesn't mean that they don't exist even if we didn't have characters who canonically do have first names and surnames, like the Cakes do. |
| Anonymous #627049 8 months ago |
Character name in show: Rose
Character name in toy line: Roseluck The studio and the marketing are two separate entities. Seeing how the majority of blindbags are backgrounds at best, and how almost none of which have any particular significance, it doesn't exactly matter whether the names are consistent with fanon, or even with each other. Why? Because people are still going to watch their show and buy their toys. |
| Anonymous #627052 8 months ago |
Calm the fuck down with this |
| Anonymous #627061 8 months ago |
Why did no one expect this to happen? To be honest does it really matter? We are still going to call them by fanon names. We are still going to enjoy the show.I mean seriously is anyone really gonna leave the fandom over some background characters the fanon named and grown attached to?If you do then I have to say you stick to your guns and you have balls. |

^ Again. Cite your source, not make vague gestures at the exact unproven assertion under discussion.
She had a perfect opportunity to express a surname in Ticket Master. And who does she describe as "the most fabulous pony in all of Equestria?" "Rarity the unicorn". Not "Rarity Bell". Rarity, species, no surname given. This is just the Nyx fandom all over again. |
| Anonymous #627105 8 months ago |
@#627049
The ponies have not shown themselves to be averse to shortening names. They don't always call Pinkie by her full name, so why couldn't "Rose" be short for "Roseluck"? |
| Anonymous #627108 8 months ago |
Luna fanon built up over a year is destroyed: pretty much nothing happens.
Hasbro decides to give names to some of the bg ponies to sell them: shitstorm. Joking about the names aside, why are we having a serious argument over this... |
| Anonymous #627112 8 months ago |
>Luna's characterization is rescued from perpetual victim woobie hell: Some people bitch, most enjoy it.
>Three guys on PB attempt to rewrite the fanon identity of the most popular background ponies: "Excuse me, WTF r u doin?" |
| thatguy #627209 8 months ago |
>Everyone accepts Cheerilee's name as canon based on the toy long before her name is uttered on screen
>Half the fandom has a fit over the the same thing with background ponies thus creating a double standard |

I was obviously joking, simply poking fun at you guys taking this shit too seriously. hence the image I posted. Of course Rarity's last name isn't Bell, don't get your panties in a bunch. |
| Ssargon #627232 8 months ago |
Perhaps we should wait for their names to be spoken in the show. |
| Vree #627544 8 months ago |
OP: Someone understands.
ALL we do in fanon is for fun and games. The fanon personalities, the names, everything can be just called false at any point in the show. We do not do it to change canon, and it's insulting - and idiotic - for people to keep suggesting that we do. It's just goofing around. And for the same reason, it's impossible to say, "well I guess your fanon is irrevelant now". Fanon ALWAYS contradicts the official, but that does not make it any less fun. It is always alternate interpretation. What happens when you get new injections from canon is that people start making up new fanon - again, stuff that has nothing to with the "official" based on that too. But fanon is always multiple interpretations. So stop worrying about it. Fanon is what fanon wants to be, because at the end of the day it's really just people joking around and coming up with their own tales. |
