I agree with #619420 on this one. As a bloke with no knowledge of anything outside G4 barring vague memories of my sister watching it, I can attest that the specials are the best place to start.

I did that myself and I have seen Return to Midnight Castle as first I thought. It's the special where Firefly flies over the rainbow to find Megan and take her to ponyland so she can help the ponies to fight a badass centaur/devil that has some magic powerthing that can corrupt anyone in evil things The second special is about some evil cat that will catch the ponies to be their slaves, but I didn't found it on youtube for now The third is the first ponymovie. then you have the first season. I hope this information helps. |

DON'T, its fucking terrible. What the fuck is wrong with you? Faust deliberately set out to make FIM so awesome *because* the old shit was so awful. You only have so much time left before you DIE, use it for something better than watching a retarded soulless glorified toy commercial from yesteryear. Read more fanfics or something instead, damn.
MLP is not fucking Transformers. Fuck that "G1" "G4" talk. How dare someone categorize FIM in a way that puts its next to that fucking dreck. |

Ignoring the songs and seaponies, Rescue from Midnight Castle is actually darker than the pilot of FiM. Spike even had a backstory. The premise is almost the same though. It's not bad for what it was, but FiM's pilot definitely had a better story. (Nightmare Moon at least had a motive.) |

n-thing Rescue from Midnight Castle. It was the first animated pony thing ever made, after all. It's not technically the pilot, though - the pilot is End of Flutter Valley (ten parts!), and Rescue was adapted into a two-parter episode later in the series.
Escape from Katrina comes after that. What Anon #619460 said, basically. Rescue from Midnight Castle is the only thing I've seen myself so far, and it wasn't bad (also, surprisingly grimdark - Nightmare Moon has nothing on the villain there), except that Firefly's song was far less badass than it should have been. She deserves something with electric guitars. Amber's voice might grate on your ears at first, but at least I got used to it fairly fast. Megan is a completely useless character who doesn't do anything a pony couldn't have done instead. Also, anyone who tries to say that the sea ponies are anything short of amazing are a few apples short of a bushel. They come entirely out of nowhere, and even the characters interacting with them in that scene seem to be thinking "What the fuck is this?" Shoo be doo, motherfuckers. |

As far as I can remember, she didn't DO anything - at least not in RFMC - that required opposable thumbs.
(also, when you have characters who can use magic to do things, I don't think opposable thumbs is that big of a deal) |
