
“I don't think you should,” Nicole said, stepping closer. Allie did not take her eyes from the stone or move to open the door behind her. The tween's attention was completely focused on the bauble and she let her arms grow slack. The basketball slipped free and bounced away to roll into obscurity. A moment later, the metallic water bottle hit the tile floor with a ringing clatter. Allie did not react. Nicole smiled and walked forward until Allie's eyes were inches from the necklace.
