My name is “Reeve”, and they say that life is full of surprises. That’s bullshit. Anon, the only human in the school, asked me out a few days ago. That is not is not surprising, I get asked out a lot. What is also not surprising is that he never showed up, that happens a lot as well. It was a favourite tactic of theirs to make fun of me. A hot guy asks me out, gives me a date and location, and then instead of him it’s his friends showing up taking photos and laughing at me. I was such a fool back then, I just kept falling for that trick time and time again. Eventually I learned how to deal with it, I’d agree to the “date” and instead of showing up I’d hide somewhere close by and take pics of my would be bullies. I made a nice little collage with those pics, called “the stupidest people in the city” and placed it on the school’s bulletin board. It got the message across nicely, nobody bothered me since then. Except for Anon, not that I blame him, he’s a transfer student so he probably doesn’t- “Hey, sorry to keep you waiting.” No fucking way. Before me stood Anon, in his usual attire staring me down. How is this even happening right now? Am I having a stroke? “Why are you staring me down like that Reeve?” A slight look of apprehension appears on Anon’s face, most dinos cannot read human faces, unless a human expressess a particularly strong emotion they will seem like they are “blank”. I am not most dinos, and right now I must look really fucked, gotta fix this before he thinks I’m some weirdo. “Oh! Sorry about that, you startled me there man.” “Honestly that shaved head of yours is really distracting, are you balding already?” “Christ’s sake I AM NOT-” “Wait, you can see my head?” “...!” “...Humans are mammals, right?” “Mammals are hairy, and you are human, thus a mammal, so I just… assumed…” “...Hm.” The man hums as he looks at me with a neutral, but quite intense expression. I shift around on the bench in discomfort, he knows something’s up. He was looking for something to use to make fun of me, and now he found it. It’s over, it’s genuinely and unmistakably over for me. “...Right, anyway now that I’m here, why don’t we hang out like I said we would?” “Huh?” I look up at him, his expression has softened, I had forgotten he had asked me out. Well, it doesn’t look like he’s here to mock me, so why not just humor him? “Alright bud, so what’s today’s plan for our date?” “For the last time this is NOT A DATE!” “It isn’t? Fuuuck man, I was really looking forward to that pizza…” The day had been full of surprises, I didn’t really feel like doing anything in particular so we just spent some time talking on the school rooftop. No insightful or deep conversations were had, just mindless conversation. And I just noticed the sun’s setting down, my dad will kill me once I get home. “...” Suddenly Anon gasps slightly as he watches the city landscape from the rooftop. “Dude it’s just the sunset, the hell’s that reaction?” Don’t get me wrong, the light show is nice and all, but this is- “I’ve never seen it before…” Ah. “Usually by this hour I’m already home.” “Man, that's sad.” “Gee, thanks.” “You’re welcome.” We stand in silence for a short while, silently watching the sunset. “Aw shit.” “Hmm? What is it now?” “I gotta go home right now.” “Why?” Anon looks almost dejected as he speaks. “Let’s just say that the place I live in is a shithole.” “Sorry to hear that, want me to escort you home?” “Nah, as long as I get home before night I’ll be fine.” “If you say so.” “I’ll be going now, so huh… wanna hang out again?” “...Sure, I’m not against it.” “Alright, see ya.” I wave him goodbye as he runs off, he’s really in a hurry. … Haah… I feel like I’ve run a marathon, I think I’ll just go home and sleep. Ring ring. My phone’s ringing, better check who it is. … It’s dad. … Fuck. “Hey dad-” “WHERE THE HELL ARE-” “Are you sitting down right now?” “Huh? No I’m-” “...” “What did you do this time? Are you at the police station again?” “No I’m still in school, I uh… ummm…” “Did something happen? Are you hurt?” “No I- I think I made a friend today.” “I-You- WHAT?” “I’ll tell you everything that happened when I return home.” I hang up the call. … Somehow, I feel even more tired than I was before. *Sigh* What a day this was.
