Summary: I always wanted one. Someone was attempting to wake me. I could tell that much. Maybe it was the warmth I felt around me or the dream I wanted to keep chasing, but I didn't want to. But as the minutes ticked by it became harder and harder to ignore the gentle touch. “Arrghh.” I groaned and rolled over attempting to escape the prodding, or tried to. I might have been a little close to the edge. Combat roll, headbutt, yup still got it. The first beginnings of light could be seen through the window. It barely gave the room enough light to see. From the ground I could just make out a few splinters that I missed from my dresser getting trashed. The first thing I realized is that I had actually slept. Not napped, not passed out, but honest sleep. Never would I have thought I would miss something so… mundane? Normal? The second thing I realized was that it felt like my legs were attempting to send me into pain seizures. Raptor Jesus please… I know I promised to take better care of my body… But never again would I destroy my legs to this point. A head peaked over the side of the bed. “What you doing down there?” I could make out the smile on Lucy’s face. “Morning ritual.” I switched to a relaxed ‘cool guy’ pose with my hands behind my head. “What's up?” “Just thought you wanted to meet Naser this morning, that's all.” Oh shit. What time was it anyways? Judging by the light it was still early. How early, I wasn't sure. I scrambled up, wincing as I got my feet under me. “Relax Anon. You have plenty of time.” Grabbing my phone I checked the time. It was over an hour and a half before I was meeting Naser. “I still got plenty of time… you could have let me sleep another 30 minutes.” “You plan on walking today?” I nodded. I couldn't get into the habit of using taxis, it was too expensive. “I just figured that-” Her jaws split into a huge yawn. “-with your legs you would need a bit of a head start.” Another yawn sneaks out as she holds a hand to her snout. “You sleep alright?” “...” I took her silence as a no. Lucy turned away from me. I sat on the bed and placed what I hoped was a comfortable hand on her shoulder. “Hey… what's up.” Not very smooth but it got my point across. “... Just.. have a lot to think about, you know.” Her hands brushed over the wounds on her arms making her flinch. “I… was scared to sleep…” She finished in a whisper. I turned around and place both hands on her shoulders making her look at me. “Fan- erm Lucy. Listen to me.” I saw her lips quirk in a small grin at my stumble. “You need to rest… Ok? You had a long day yesterday.” She sighed and looked away. “...ok..” She tugged at the white sleeves of my borrowed shirt and glanced away from me. It would have to work. After getting fully dressed I spent the next few minutes stretching and trying to get my legs to fucking relax in preparation of the long walk back to school. When I was fairly certain that they wouldn't collapse under I grabbed Lucy’s bag and checked it to make sure that the gun was there. Feeling prepared I started towards the door. “Anon..” Lucy’s voice stopped me at the door. “Are… you going to class today?” She was curled up on my bed peeking out of the covers. I could see a fragile worry in her eyes as they caught the light. “Nah, not today. I'll drop off the package and head straight back here, don't you worry. Until then please get some rest, hm?” She nodded in clear relief as she settled back down amongst my thin sheets. With a final wave I was on a familiar track back to the school. And judging by the abysmal pace I was making, Lucy was right in waking me up early. Raptor Jesus.. Do people really run for fun? They always say the first day is the worst but it can't really be this bad! Skin Row isn't usually the place to be if you're suffering any type of disability, though by now I was a common enough face that people knew I wasn't an easy mark. Still had my knife on me though. And currently a gun… You know, just in case. Doesn't mean I'm any less nervous carrying a stolen gun down Crackhead Avenue. I pushed my poor legs harder as I tried to put as much distance as I could with the rundown district. Slowly the school came into view. The sun had peaked over the horizon on my journey over at some point, but checking my phone had assured me I wouldn't be late for the meeting. I could just make out an atrocious jacket. Naser was standing at the top of the stairs leaning against the wall of the school. A scowl etched into his face and his foot rapidly tapping. His mood didn’t improve much when he finally spotted me. “Anon! You have a lot of nerve-!” I put a finger to my lips to silence him. “Not here dude.” He clearly wanted to argue but I didn't give him the chance as I walked away towards a little secluded spot. One that I actually recognized. It was the bench that tried to break my ass on my first day, though thankfully replaced with a nice sturdy looking metal one. I plopped down with confidence this time, giving my sore legs a rest after such a difficult journey. Naser slowly sat down next to me, his glare never leaving me. “There's a lot you need to hear Naser.” “You're damn right Anon! I swear if you think for a second I'll just hand Fang over to you then you're even dumber than I thought.” I let him vent, this must have been on his mind all night. “What the hell were you thinking! You're still in highschool! Fang doesn't need this right now! And no offense but you're not exactly the best choice!” He's red in the face and I think I can even make out a vein pulsing. “I mean sh- FUCK! THEY are in an emotional state after that prom disaster and you think you can just take advantage of them! WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE HUH!?!” He stands above me now, fist balled into my shirt as he jerks me around. “You're right. I'm a nobody who doesn't deserve anything…” My words seemed to catch him off guard as his shaking stopped. “But Fang does, I know I haven't done much to inspire confidence in me. But I promise you that I'll do everything I can to make sure that she is happy.” I shift in his grip to pull Fang’s bag out. “Now before we continue I need you to see this.” I handed him the bag as he finally let go of shirt, leaving small holes behind where his claws had punctured. With one last glare my way Naser slowly unzipped it. “Anon this better be-.” He didn’t finish his thought as he suddenly jerked back, fumbling with the bag until he dropped it on the concrete. His eyes were wide as he glanced back between me and the bag. “Holy shit! What…Why the fuck does she have his gun!” “Relax and stop making a scene.” Naser swung his head left and right, checking to see if anyone was around. Luckily the few students that were arriving weren’t giving us too much attention. “RELAX!” I once again found him tearing into my shirt as he shook me. “How the fuck am I supposed to relax, she stole his gun! His fucking gun!” His eyes flicked around wildly as he began to panic. “What did she do!” “Nothing man!” I grabbed both shoulders and tried to settle him down. “Relax she didn’t do anything.” “Wha.. fuck me! Why did she steal his gun!?! Anon please.” “I’ll tell you everything ok? Fang wanted you to know as well man. I wasn’t lying when I said she needed her family right now.” Naser collapsed on the bench next me and cradled his head in his hands. “Please Anon… I need the truth. This is huge man.” “Fang agreed, she says you deserved to know. Look I know you think she hates you, and I won’t pretend I understand what’s happened between you two, but she still cares for you. Heck at first she didn’t want to drag you into it, she was scared to get you in trouble.” He peaked at me through his fingers, disbelief in his eyes. “But ima be honest, I’m out of my depth here. I can only help her so much and I’m afraid I won’t be enough. I need you bro.” “What was she going to do Anon…” I sighed and tried to collect my thoughts. He needed some perspective, I didn’t need him afraid of his own sister. “She wanted some people to pay. She thought the world was turning against her…” Naser’s eyes screwed shut again, a few pinpricks of moisture in the corners. “What.. because some people made fun of her at prom?” His voice was filled with doubt as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “Don’t get me wrong they were all dicks but…” “It was more than prom dude. Fang felt she wasn’t in control of her own life. Everyone was trying to turn her into something else. Trish, your dad, Naomi was just the last straw.” “Naomi?” He leaned up to look at me. “Wait, what was Naomi doing?” “Uh… well she kind of had some huge plan to put me and Fang together..” I wasn’t sure how he would handle this information but I wasn’t about to lie to the black ptero either. “She thought that if Fang had a boyfriend it would ‘fix’ all her issues and you would spend more time with her…” Naser shook his head. “This.. this makes so much sense… she was almost obsessed with how you and Fang were getting along. But.. that can’t be right! Right?” “She told me herself right before prom. She was actually kind of pissed at me for failing to ‘fix’ Fang.” He looked bewildered. “What.. what am I supposed to do with this information?” “I don’t know man. That’s up for you to decide. But I would talk to her. She may be misguided but I don’t think she had malicious intent. I think she was honestly worried about you.” “You're probably right but-.” Naser’s eyes suddenly snapped to me. “Wait a second…” He was beginning to breathe faster, his brain finally putting pieces together. “Yesterday… in the hall.. Oh fuck.. she called Naomi.. you didn’t propose, you were trying to stop her!” I nodded. His hands returned to cradling his head, as if squeezing hard enough could make him forget what he just heard. “Fuck… fuck.. fuckfuckfuck.” His foot started rapidly tapping as a stream of obscenities left his snout. “She was gonna… Naomi..” Naser’s fist slammed into the bench. “This is my fault..” “What? No Naser, we both know this was my fault.” He shook his head. “Anon, I’m her brother. I saw the signs and ignored them… I’m a horrible sibling.” “Hey!” I snapped. “You're a wonderful brother alright? You are always trying to help Fang, yes you screw up. But the efforts there and she sees that as well. Listen man she misses you the same you miss her.” I was gonna have to sit the two of them down together so this crap could get settled. He took a steading breath. “I.. I don't know where to start.” I placed a hand on his shoulder. “That's easy bro. One step at a time.” Naser let out a weak chuckle. “Hey man… uh.. Sorry for trying to beat you up for.. You know. You're not as bad as I thought.” “Thanks.. I think.” That was a compliment right? “How.. did you know what she was going to do?” “Believe it or not but I had a dream, Fang… hurt a lot of people. You included. The next morning I woke up and Fang wasn't in bed. My alarm clock was unplugged as well. Maybe it was a combination of everything, but I just knew she was going to do something she regretted. When she didn't answer my calls I was hauling ass down the street.” Naser stared at me in amazement. “That's.. Unbelievable. Raptor Jesus, This was all avoided with a dream..” His hands had clasped in front of him in a quick silent prayer. Huh never pictured him as the religious type. Naser gently picked up Fang’s bag and peaked back inside. “How.. is she handling things?” “She’s.. Not good but she knows she was wrong. We talked for a few hours last night about it. She’s hurting man. She wants to make her own decisions in life without any outside control.” Naser slowly zipped the bag back up before standing again. “I need to get this home…” “Ya you don't need your dad finding out. I can't even picture how pissed he would be.” I joke. “Imagine if I had told him about your fake proposal.” He sent a smirk at me that left me sweating. “Weellll about that…” Naser’s grin instantly flipped. “..What?..” “I might have proposed to her on the roof later.” Oh look he's back to trying to rip my shirt to pieces. “Anon are you trying to piss me off!” He shook me so hard I swear I was looking at three of him. “Look, I appreciate what you did. But this isn't what Fang needs right now!” I tried to glare at the three headed Naser. “It wAsEnT eXaCtlY a ReAl pRoPosAl… STOP FUCKING SHAKING ME!” I yanked his hands off and succeeded in ripping my shirt almost in half. “Jesus! Look! It was a promise to stay together.” A shouting match isn't what we needed right now. “It also helped explain what happened in school to everyone! There's no plans for at least a couple of years.” “So what, you're just gonna lie?” He shook a fist as if he wanted to knock my teeth out. “It's not a lie!” The shout escaped me before I could even think about it. “I love Fang… I.. want to spend the rest of my life making her happy..” I truly did, she deserved it after how everyone, myself included, took advantage of her. “This isn’t a lie, not to me. Fang was the first person to ever care about a nobody like me. I.. can’t picture a life without her anymore..” Naser’s face shifted between various emotions before slumping down. His hands once again found my shoulders, though thankfully with much less thrashing. He didn’t say a thing for a while as he stared at the ground. “…Ok…” “Ok?” “Ok!” He shouted. “I believe you… I.. probably shouldn't, but…” He shook his head and straightened up and locked eyes with me. “Look, Fang cares about you! Even I can see that. But.. I’m he- their brother.. And I never thought this would ever happen. Fang was never the type to talk about guys or bring a guy over until you showed up. I guess her taste was a little.. Less scaly.” He gestured to my body. “I don't have the right to be the overprotective brother… They care for you so dammit that's good enough for me!” “Naser bro..” I’m not gonna lie, having Lucy’s brother on my side had me feeling a little emotional. “Don't call me bro.” his nails dug a little harder into my shoulders. “...Not yet..” “Alright… Homie?” He sighed and turned around, starting to walk off to the front of the school. “Come on Anon lets go.” “You skipping school today?” He glanced over his shoulder at me like I was crazy. “I have a gun in my bag Anon.. There's no way I'm staying today.” I quickly caught up with him. “Besides I don't want to see Naomi right now anyways..” “Probably for the best, I wouldn't message her either until at least tomorrow. You've had an emotionally exhausting day today and don't want to say anything you normally wouldn't.” We made it to the Nas-car and he gestured for me to get in. Sitting in the front seat for once was an actual good change. Ya his car was beat to shit, but the front wasn't nearly as bad as the back was. Possible because Fang always sat in the back, judging by all the cigarette burns. “Look if you're gonna do this, you're gonna do it right!” He sped out of the school parking lot, curious dinos watching the track captain apparently ditch with the dirtbag. “Dino nuggets. You got them?” I shook my head. “Then we’re getting them, bbq sauce too. And none of that off brand crap Fang only eats baby rays.” “Dude what are you doing?” I was getting a bit rattled at his sudden barrage. “I’m making sure you're ready for what you're getting into. If I can’t stop this, then I’ll have to make sure you're the best boyfriend this worlds ever seen. Now, do not touch the Dino nuggets without their permission, they are not yours.” He went into a tirade of Fang trivia as he sped down the streets. “Hope you have a lot of shirts and jackets. They will tear them up, sometimes without reason, they're just bored..” “Wonder where she gets that from..” I gestured down to my poor shirt. “Sorry about that man.. Look I'm usually more in control but it was a long night and you kind of threw me for a loop.” I gave my best ‘don't worry about it’ shrug. “Listen Anon.. I’m giving you this one chance. One Chance! Ok?” “That's all I ask for. Trust me, you have my permission to beat the tar out of me if I screw up.” A few pit stops later we were on the road towards my apartment. Naser was a little hesitant after hearing where I lived but it was a little too late to just not drop me off. At some point our conversation died out. It was an awkward silence. Naser looked like he wanted to say something but whenever he would glance at me he would quickly divert attention back to the road. After a tense few minutes we finally made it back to my apartment. I could tell Naser had a lot on his mind. His eyes were constantly unfocused as if he was somewhere else. After we came to a stop I almost let out a sigh of relief as I went to open his door. The doors locked right as I jerked the handle. Glancing at Naser I saw his hand resting on the button as he stared at me with a slight frown. “... Earlier you said when you woke up that Fang wasn't in your bed… and they didn't come home that night..” He gave me the side eye as he silently integrated me. “You wouldn't have anything to add to that would you?” Cold sweat sprang down my back as I stared at him like a man whose Xrox party chats were just leaked. “...Anon this is the part where you deny it..” I couldn't find the strength to move as alarms blared in my head. This was never in the equation! Hell I had even forgotten we had sex with all the bullshit that came after. Do I just play dumb and lie? A fist shot across and smacked me right in the ribs. “Ah fuck man!” Another hit and then another. “Shit look I’m sorry! She seduced me!” “Please tell me you at least use protection!” “What? No, is that a trick question man she's a dinosaur.” Another hit snaked into my guard and nearly knocked the breath out of me. “You fucking idiot! Do you just turn your brain off in class!” Naser was once again fuming mad at me. “Just because it's rare doesn't mean it can't happen!” “Wait, are you serious?” “Of course I am!” “How is that even remotely possible?” He sighed and placed a hand on his crest. “Anon Im not about to explain the birds and bees of human dino reproduction. But it CAN happen.” Huh… that's a weird thought. I guess a part of me always assumed that once I started dating Fang that kids just weren't in the equation. I felt a gentle warmth in my chest at the thought. Right in the same spot that once held that horrible empty feeling. We could have children.. Sure definitely not for a while, but we had the option.. “Look! Just… be careful is what I'm saying…” Naser thumbed the unlock button, finally letting me out. I collected the few bags of groceries that he had so graciously paid for and made my way around the Nas-car. “Anon!” I turned around to see Naser had rolled his window down. He seemed to consider something before tossing a small square out the window to me. “Look at me! That isn't a free pass to do what you want you hear me! Emergencies only!” He glared through the open window at me. “And remember!” his fingers jerked from his face to mine in an ‘I’m watching you!’ gesture. “I know where you live...” With that he burned rubber leaving Skin Row behind him. Turning the square over I couldn't help but feel a little embarrassed at the Magnasorous condom. Naser never struck me as the type of guy to carry one, but then again he did have a long term girlfriend. I shook my head, not important right now. Now I was heading up the stairs to my apartment. To see the most important person in my life… I peeked through the door as quietly as I could. “Honey… I’m home..” I whispered as I scanned for Lucy. I spotted her on the bed. Her wings splayed out behind and her head under a ball of sheets. Eh, I'll let her sleep a little longer. She looked like she could use it after last night. But I could act like a cringe trad husband and make her some breakfast. I placed a hefty amount of dino nuggets on a plate before sticking them in the old microwave. Keeping a close eye on the timer I managed to pop the door with 1 second to spare. Though my efforts were in vain as I hear shifting on the bed behind me. Lucy had her snoot twitching, sticking out from under the sheet. A few more snoffs was all it took before she rose from the bed, shaking the sheet from her head as she did so. She looked at me with blurry eyes, her hair in a serious bed head. “...Anon?” “Morning sweet tooth.” I brought the plate over to her with the bottle of bbq. “Figured you would be hungry. You know, since we barely touched the pizza.” She stared at the plate of dino nuggets as if they were gold. “I’m assuming the talk with Naser went well if he's spilling all my secrets.” Her eyes lingered on my tattered shirt and jacket. “Or maybe not…” “Nah it actually went pretty good.” Though I could feel bruises forming on my poor sides. “He’s gonna help us by the way.” “Figured he would. I don’t know why he even still tries to help me..” “Because he’s your brother, trust me he’ll stick with you through thick and thin.” I placed a hand on her shoulder and gave her a thumbs up. “We totally hit it off too.” Lucy raised an eyebrow at me as she dumped sauce on her nuggets. “Yup, already practically brothers.” “Wait.. really?” She sounded strangely hopeful. I guess knowing at least one family member approved meant a lot to her. “Well.. he did punch me a few times.” I rubbed the back of my head sheepishly. “But by the end of it I think I even have his blessing!” “You told him about the whole… roof thing.” She paused mid bite as her face turned red. I nodded as she tried to impersonate a pterodactyl shaped tomato. We sat in a comfy silence as we had our breakfast/lunch. Lucy even let me have some as well. After a good 10 minutes the plate was cleaned and my stomach was filled, though Lucy had managed to eat about 4 to my 1. So we laid back on my bed, feet dangling over the edge, and just shared each other's company. “Anon.. how.. did he take it?” Her voice was barely above a whisper. She didn’t have to specify what she meant. “Alright I guess.. freaked out definitely… But the first thing he asked was if you were alright.” I could hear a sniffle from my left. “Lucy.. what happened between you two?” Lucy slowly rolled over. Her arms slid around my waist and her face pressed against my chest as she hugged me. I could tell she had started crying again. And that it was my fault. “You don’t have to tell me about it..” “…You know his wing?” She was peering up at me from my chest. I nodded. “…That’s my fault..” I wrapped an arm around her, trying to comfort her what little I could. “When we were kids he asked me if we could fly.. I lied and said yes… before I knew it he had jumped off the cliff. I.. I was so sure that I killed him..” She started shaking harder as she tried to grip the remains of my shirt. “It sounds like you were just kids. You couldn’t have known he would jump.” “But it was still my fault! I lied to him and he almost died! But.. he just pretended nothing happened..” Her voice lowered to a whisper again. “He should have screamed at me. Hit me… Hated me… But he just. Didn’t.” She rubbed her face against my chest and tried to hug me tighter. “I think that’s when it started… This divide between us. We grew apart and I just.. felt like he should hate me. But no matter what I did he never would.” I couldn't put a voice to my feelings. I had always wondered what happened to Naser’s wing, but it felt weird to just ask someone about a disability. So I did what I could. Hugged her tight and let her know someone was there for her. Slowly she seemed to get her feelings back under control. “...hah..fuck. Here I am again.” One of her hands covers her face as she sniffs hard behind it. “Just dumping my issues on you.. I’m fucking pathetic..” I gently grab her hand and lower it, but her eyes shift so they never meet mine.. “Lucy, look at me.” I traced a finger under her eye to wipe the tears away. “Never think of it like that. You hear me? I’m not lying when I said you were the most important person in the world to me. It hurts me to see you hurting. If there is anything you're unsure or scared about I want you to know you can always tell me.” “Anon.. Don't take this the wrong way but.. You're different..” She squeezes the hand I had on her face and gives me a small smile. “I don't know what it is but.. Well.. I don't know. It feels like you.. Love me more? Does that make sense?” “Who knows. I guess the saying ‘you never know what you had until it's gone’ holds some truth. I thought I was going to lose you.. And I was scared. Scared that I would be alone again..” I'm being way more open these days. “Spears once told me I wasn't the only person in the world… and I think I finally understand what he was trying to tell me.” Had I really changed that much? I wanted to think I have, but I still felt like a useless ass. I could still see Naser’s disappointment as he bled out… I was not going to disappoint anyone ever again… I jerked a bit as I felt something touch my face. Lucy’s claw was wiping my cheek.. Oh I had started to cry at some point. She was staring at me with such open… care. Like I meant the world to her. Fuck me I don’t deserve you. “Anon you deserve so much more than me..” She whispers as her head stretches towards me. This kiss was a little different than anyone we had shared before. Gentle and caring, as if we were scared to push the other. A phone buzzing broke us apart. Lucy quickly checks hers, disappointment quickly showing as she sees who it is. Though the disappointment did turn into a small grin. “What's up?” “Sorry.. Was hoping Trish had finally messaged me back. Just Naser. “ Her smile grew larger and she rubbed at one of her eyes with a palm. “Idiots just saying that he loves me.. And that he got the ‘item’ back without getting caught.” Whew, that was a relief. Last thing I needed was Ripley ripping me in half. Pun only a little intended. “Hey don't get too jealous but ima give your brother a kiss tomorrow for being so amazing.” “..are you going to school tomorrow?” Lucy had turned her attention back to me. “I probably should.. I'll collect some of our work so we can catch up. Shouldn't be that much since it's near the end of the year.” I wasn't sure about leaving her alone for so long, but I didn't want to coddle her too much. She was an adult and could handle a few hours alone. “You gonna come back with me? I’ll be lonely in science.” She shook her head slightly. “No.. Not yet. I’m still not in a good enough head space. If I see Naomi…” Lucy’s fist shook in front of her as she scowled. “Fuck me! I.. I want to hurt her Anon..” “You want to know something?” She looked away from her clenched fist to me. “I wanted to hurt her too. I really did.” I grabbed her fist that was still trembling in front of her. “But I realized something. It's because of her that I got to meet you. And let me tell you, meeting Fang that day was the best part of my life. Ya, Naomi was a manipulative bitch. But I don't think she was trying to ruin anyone's lives.” Lucy looked conflicted. I couldn't tell if she wanted to scream in rage or cry. “Look I'm not saying to forgive her, honestly, I still don't. Just don't knock her teeth out the next time you see her, ok? For me?” “...ok..” She gave a small nod. “I… still don't think I can go to school tomorrow. But the day after.. I promise I'll try.” That's all I could really ask of her. Something this big wouldn't be swept under the rug in a night. But as long as she was moving forward I could care less at the pace. We spent the next hour or so tangled up on the bed, Lucy’s head on my chest as she ideally traced a finger on me. On the table sat her phone as we watched an old Friday the 13th film. We decided to take turns on picking what to watch each day. “..cy Mous” “Hmm?” I thought I heard her whisper something. “Oh! Did I say that out loud?” She placed a hand over her mouth as she tinged red. “Say what?” “Nothing, it's stupid..” She buried her snout into my chest again. “It's just.. You know.. If we got married.. I would be Lucy Mous..” “Well… If we're talking about it… I think I would prefer Anon Arron.” [POST-NOTES] This ones a wee bit longer. Felt like I was rushing ends on the last few after hitting a word count so just let this one flow more naturally.
