The Reign of Ysa Chapter One Ysa and Moto sat side by side after their coronation ceremony. One by one the pride members chatted with them, and gave them their good wishes. Ysa was all smiles, and she noticed that Taj was seemingly happy as well. She was grateful towards her twin, not many young lions would be able to give up the throne so easily. And she trusted him wholeheartedly, she didn't believe for one moment that he would ever betray her. As everyone came and went, Ysa gave a yawn, ready to go for a nap, but then she saw her father come into Pride Rock, and when he came up, she gave him a warm hug. “Hello father.” she greeted, smiling at him. He smiled back at her, and gave a small bow to Moto. “Ysa, Moto, there is someone else who would like to say hello to you.” Aru said. Moto and Ysa looked at one another, they could have sworn that everyone already greeted them. But just then, Ysa saw something that she almost fainted over, her mother, who had been banished years ago, came into sight. Jinka slowly walked in, she looked thinner than how Ysa remembered, but she was still her mother. “Mom!!” Ysa shouted, running up and nuzzling her mother. Jinka purred softly, holding onto her baby. “Oh my Ysa, it is good to see you.” she said. Moto came up, and gave her a hug as well. “And you must be Moto, I've heard a lot about you from your sister.” she said with a laugh. “Yeah, my sister can be a socialite when she wants to.” he said. Ysa signalled for everyone to come outside, she wanted to hear about her mother, and more importantly, why she had returned. “Does Taj know you're here?” she asked, as she walked alongside Jinka. Jinka nodded, making her way down the rock. “We saw each other briefly, and I gave him a hug, he seems to be happy that you're the queen.” she said. They all laid down in the long savannah grass, hearing the animals around them going about their day. “So what made you come back?” Ysa asked, looking over at her mom. Jinka laughed. “You're always so quick to jump onto things Ysa, that's why you will make a good queen.” Ysa sheepishly smiled, feeling slightly embarrassed. Jinka gave a sigh, and looked off into the distance, as though she was recalling her past. “Sitai was a terrible king. He never thought about his kingdom or the animals living in it, all he could think of was conquering lands and looking good. My poor father, if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have made it out. He covered for me, saying that he saw me go to the border to die...but if Sitai ever finds out the truth...” Jinka closed her eyes shut. “Then we will be here to protect you.” Moto said sincerely. Jinka looked up at him and smiled. Ysa looked over at Moto as well, she was so proud of him, he always said the right thing. Ysa went over to Jinka and nuzzled her. “You go rest mother, you need it.” she said softly. Jinka nodded. Aru followed her, not only making sure she would be okay, but he also wanted to catch up with her. He was worried she might not want to speak to him again, not after what he had done, but hopefully she would consider the past to be in the past, and leave it at that. Ysa sighed, resting her head against Moto. “Do you think we should wait to tell them?” she asked quietly. Moto nodded. “Let's give her a day to rest.” Moto said, placing a paw over Ysa's. “We'll tell them first thing tomorrow.” Ysa woke up right at sunrise the next morning. As she made her way to the watering hole to have a drink, she looked down at her belly. It didn't seem to be any bigger. But then again, when Vidhi was pregnant with Nyota, it took her a while to show as well. Ysa stretched and bent down to lap up the water, it was nice and cool, hopefully today would be like that as well. She sighed happily, but was then interrupted from her drink. “Hey Ysa!” she heard from behind her. She turned around, and saw Maji trotting up towards her. Ysa offered a smile. “Hi Maji, what's up?” she asked as Maji took her turn at the watering hole. “Oh, nothing much.” she said, turning back to go to Pride Rock. Ysa followed her, and they walked in silence for a moment. “So when are you due?” Maji said suddenly. Ysa stopped, looking surprised. “What? How do you know...?” Ysa said, making sure nobody else could hear. Maji laughed. “Oh please, I can tell just as well as any other lioness when someone is expecting.” she teased. Ysa looked around, then up to Pride Rock. “Do you think anyone else knows?” she said worryingly. She kind of wanted to keep this a secret, until this morning. Maji shook her head. “Besides Moto? I doubt it. C'mon, everyone else is getting up! You want to tell them today don't you?!” Maji said, running past Ysa. Ysa giggled to herself, and ran up to Pride Rock behind Maji. Chapter Two “Pregnant?!” Jinka cried, looking over at Aru. “Are you sure?” Ysa nodded, smiling at everyone. All the other lionesses were thrilled, including Nyota. “Does this mean I can play with them?” she asked. Ysa laughed and patted Nyota's head. “Maybe when they're big enough, but until then you can be my little helper, okay?” she said, giving her a wink. Nyota's eyes glistened, and pranced back to her mother. Jinka went up to Ysa and gave her a hug. “Well, it's going to be difficult, but you'll do just fine.” she told her daughter. Ysa smiled, bringing her mom in close. “Thanks mom.” she whispered, looking into her mother's eyes. Taj and Maji were beside each other, both smiling away. Ysa went over to Taj, whispering to him. “Are you and Maji...?” Ysa started. Taj shook his head quickly. “No, no. Not yet at least.” he said quietly. Ysa nodded, and gave a smile to Maji. Taj was a bit odd, but Ysa was certain that within the next few seasons, she would also have a little niece or nephew of her own. “So, when are you due?” Aru asked. Ysa looked over behind her, and saw a tall, broad figure standing there. Ysa smiled, nuzzling her father. “Oh dad.” she said looking up at him. “Maybe within the next two months or so.” she said. Aru nodded, and looked over at Moto who was coming up beside them. “Well, we shall make sure that the whole kingdom is here for you. And Moto, the birth might be difficult, but don't worry, Pir left behind the best baboon around, his name is Huduma.” Ysa looked up at Aru, confused. “Left behind? What do you mean?” she asked. Aru sighed, looking away. “Well, for the past couple of months, Pir knew his time was up, so he took in an apprentice, and taught him all there is to know.” Ysa looked over at Moto, who hadn't even met Pir since he had been here. Ysa looked down, then she remembered something. “What about Zuka?” she asked. Then, she heard the flutter of wings, and a pair of feet landed on her shoulder. “Do not worry your majesty, I have trained one of my chicks to be your majordomo, in fact, I was going to ask you to meet her today, I think you will find that she is suitable for your tastes.” Zuka said. Ysa grinned widely, looking over at her father. “Can I go daddy?” she asked excitedly. Aru shrugged his shoulders. “You're the queen now sweetheart, you can do whatever you want.” Ysa laughed, and headed outside of Pride Rock, but just before that, she turned back and gave Moto a kiss on the cheek. “Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about you.” she said. Moto laughed, and signalled her off. As she ran out, he looked up at Aru, and they shared a good, hearty laugh with each other. Ysa looked down at Sahada, who gave a small bow. “So, you are my majordomo?” Ysa said, with a serious tone to her voice. Sahada nodded, looking up at her. “I'll be here for you through anything your highness.” Ysa looked at her for a moment, but then gave a huge smile. “Good! I always need someone to talk to!” Sahada laughed, and perched on top of Ysa's shoulder. Ysa looked at Sahada, then over to Zuka who was sitting high on a branch. “She's perfect Zuka.” Ysa said, practically glowing. Zuka bowed. “It was my pleasure your majesty.” he said. Ysa nodded, then turned around. “Come on!” she said, as Sahada flew up. “First thing you can help me with...planning on the names for this cub!” she said, running towards Pride Rock. Chapter Three The rains were softly coming down across the Pridelands, Moto was waiting outside, looking up at the sky, in another hour or so the sun would be cutting through the night. He could feel his heart beating inside, and he paced to calm himself down. Huduma came out right then, and Moto raced up to him. “How is she?” he asked anxiously. “How did it go? Is she okay?” Huduma raised his hand to silence Moto. “She is just fine your highness, she's requesting for you to come in now.” he said, leading Moto inside. Sahada flew alongside Moto. “Go tell the animals.” he said. Sahada nodded, and flew off into the distance. When daylight breaks, the animals will all come to welcome the new cub. If a cub is born in the daylight, then the animals wait for the next sunrise, but if the cub is born in the night, then they will come as soon as the first light touches the savannah. Moto went inside, and saw Ysa laying down, with a cub in her arms. He raced beside her and gave her a nuzzle. “So?” he asked, looking down. “Boy or girl?” Ysa looked up at him and smiled, kissing his cheek. “It is a prince.” she said softly. Moto spun around excitedly. He looked down at his cub, who looked just like him. “He's so sweet.” he said quietly, giving him a kiss on the head. Ysa nodded, looking at her son. “And so peaceful.” she added. Moto smiled at her. “Amani.” Moto said. “Let's name him Amani.” Ysa looked down, smiling. “Yes, Amani. I like that.” she said, purring happily. Aru came up beside Moto. “You did wonderful my son.” he said proudly. Moto looked over at Aru, smiling back at him. “I couldn't have asked for a better teacher.” he said softly. Jinka came up to them at that moment, followed by Taj and Maji. “Oh, he's so cute!” Maji squealed. Ysa laughed, giving Amani a kiss. She never imagined that she could love another being this quickly, and as she looked down at her beautiful prince, she knew that he would be a great king one day, and that he would be surrounded by unconditional love. Months passed, and Amani grew up to be a curious and playful cub. Ysa and Moto made sure to take him along on their royal duties, and as there was peace among the Pridelands, they even felt comfortable leaving him to wander from time to time. Even Aru and Jinka would look after him. Jinka was attached so much to her grandson, he was the only thing that kept her and Aru together. Everyone knew that the royal couple wasn't exactly a couple, however they still kept peace and still lived side by side, they just were no longer lovers, and Jinka was okay with that. But Jinka knew that trouble was stirring, she knew that Sitai wouldn't just wait around for Amani to get bigger to attack; he was up to something, and Jinka could feel it. In The Maja District, Sitai and Birah were sitting side by side, discussing future plans. Birah wasn't too keen on his brother's ideas, however he knew he had to appease him. Sitai was a harsh king, and if anyone got in his way, he would make sure to destroy them without a second thought. “Your daughter, she is married to that king, correct?” Sitai asked. Darkness had just settled in, and there was a cool breeze coming in from the sea. “Yes, I believe so.” Birah replied, looking onwards. The rest of the pride was sleeping, including Ruttu and Freah. Sitai smiled. “Aru must be getting older by now...and weak.” he said, his tone as dark as the night sky. Birah looked over at him. “Yes, but I believe that Ysa and her mate are now the rulers, so why would you still be interested in Aru?” Sitai got up and sat in front of his brother. “You do not understand brother. Aru still plays a magnificent role in the Pridelands, and the sooner we get rid of him, the sooner we can claim it as our own.” Birah looked down and nodded solemnly. Sitai spoke up once more. “Listen to me Birah; soon, we have to make our move. I want you and Ruttu to help me. We will spy on them for a bit, and when the time is right, we will wipe the Pridelands clean!” he roared out, swiping his claws on a nearby tree. All Birah could do was look at his brother and shake his head. Chapter Four Amani and his dad were waiting outside Priderock. It was the middle of the night, and Ysa had just began having contractions. Moto was a bit surprised actually. Amani was just a little over a year old, and already Ysa had gotten pregnant. Moto was a bit less worried this time, but there was still a risk. Amani was nervous as well, he had asked his father to come out with him. Aru stepped out into the chilly night, and Amani ran up to him. “Grandpa! Is my baby brother born yet?” he asked excitedly, jumping up at Aru. Aru laughed and shook his head. “Not yet Amani, but I'd guess any minute now. And don't forget, it could be a little sister too.” he said, giving a little wink. Aru walked over to Moto, with Amani pouncing at his tail. “Nervous?” he asked Moto, who shook his head. Aru raised an eyebrow, and Moto gave out a long sigh. “Maybe a little.” he admitted. Aru nodded. He understood, he remembered vividly being in Moto's position. But he knew that Ysa would be fine, even though she was a little early giving birth. The three lions sat there in silence, three generations sharing this special moment together. Huduma walked out carrying his stick, and came out to Moto. “Congratulations your highness, you have another prince.” Huduma said, giving a small bow. Amani cheered, hurrying into the cave. “Haha! Told you it was going to be a brother! C'mon grandpa! Let's go!” Aru laughed, following his grandson. He wasn't as fast or agile as he used to be, but he could still keep up. Aru turned back to look at Moto, but Moto ushered him on. He wanted to speak to Huduma about his son. “Is he okay?” Moto asked as they walked in. Huduma nodded. “He is a bit small, and I don't think he will be a big lion as an adult...he is premature after all.” Moto grimaced, he knew that this meant that the only logical decision for picking a king would be Amani. For the future of the pride and the Pridelands, they needed a big and strong lion to protect them. Huduma put a hand on Moto's shoulder. “I wouldn't worry majesty. He will be healthy and happy.” Huduma gave a reassuring smile, and this made Moto smile in return. Moto slowly walked up to Ysa, Amani was already there looking down at his brother. The little cub looked exactly like a male version of Ysa, but just a little smaller. “Wow! Can I play with him?” Amani asked, looking up at Ysa. She shook her head, giving Amani a kiss on the forehead. “Not yet sweetheart, he's still too small.” Moto flinched at this. He was always going to be 'too small'...he was worried about how he would be able to manage. Huduma told him that everything would be okay...but Moto knew firsthand what it was like being weak. He and Maji almost died because of it. Maji and Taj walked up then, with Maji leading the way as usual. Her belly was protruding as well, it was just a matter of time before she gave birth. The pride was quite surprised that she was actualy pregnant...and by Taj, too. For the longest time everyone was starting to think that Taj was just asexual, he never seemed to be interested in any gender or having sex at all. But as always, Taj was full of surprises. “He's so tiny.” Taj said, looking down. Ysa nodded, and looked over at Moto. “And that's what we're going to name him.” she said softly. “Vidogo.” Taj smiled and looked over at Maji, giving her a nuzzle. Moto went over to Ysa, nuzzling her as well. “Vidogo.” he said. “My little Vidogo.” Chapter Five Maji gave birth just a week after Ysa, to a little girl they named Uzuri. It suited her greatly, and the three cubs, Amani, Vidogo and Uzuri, grew up together in the Pridelands, playing and being carefree. “Amani!! Wait up!” Vidogo called to his brother one sunny afternoon. He, Uzuri and Amani were travelling off to the Outlands. There were some new baby meerkats which they were desperate to see. And since Moto and Ysa were off doing their royal duties, there was no better time. Amani looked back to see Vidogo running up, panting. “Oh come on Vid!” he said. “If you're gonna want to be king, you have to be able to run quickly!” Vidogo finally caught up, and sat down. Uzuri came up behind him, plopping down herself. Amani rolled his eyes at the both of them. “You two are pathetic.” he said. Uzuri scrunched up her nose at Amani. “Well it's not our fault! You're just too fast.” she said, adding the last part quietly. Amani laughed. “Ha! Well, I have a challenge for both of you then.” he said, looking around. Vidogo stared off to see what his brother was looking at, then looked back at him, confused. “You see that termite hill over there?” Amani pointed. “Yeah...” Uzuri replied, wondering what Amani was getting at. “Well, whoever can climb that thing the fastest, proves that he is truly the best!” Amani said, puffing out his chest. “Or she!” Uzuri remarked. Amani laughed, nodding his head. Vidogo looked at the termite hill. It wasn't that big...he could probably do it. “Okay!” Vidogo said. “Let's go!” The three cubs raced off towards the termite hill. Uzuri noticed that it was crawling with termites, every last inch of it. She shuddered, turning away. “I change my mind, you two can do it.” she said. Amani laughed. “You party pooper.” he mocked. Uzuri shook her head. “I am not!” she shouted angrily. This made Amani laugh again. “Yes you are! You won't even climb one measly little termite hill.” he said. Uzuri pouted, looking up at the hill. She threw back her head, and proceeded to climb up the hill. “Fine.” she said. “Just to prove you wrong, I'll go first.” she stared up the hill, and started to climb up it, putting one paw carefully on an edge or foot hole. “Careful Uzuri!” Vidogo called. Uzuri laughed. “I will! You'll see, I can do this!” she shouted back. But then, she did the worst thing anyone could do, she looked down, and when she saw how high she really was, she screamed in horror. That caused her to lose her footing, and when she tried to regain it, her foot actually cracked through the hill. She screamed again as she fell right in. Vidogo and Amani ran up to the hill, they couldn't see where she was. “Uzuri! Are you alright?” Amani asked. “Um, yeah...I'm okay. It's just a little dark in here.” she said, her voice echoing. Vidogo turned around. “Where are you going?” Amani asked. “To get help!” Vidogo said. Amani shook his head, and grabbed his brother by the shoulder. “No Vid. You'll take too long. I'm fast, so I'll go. You stay here and make sure Uzuri is alright.” Vidogo sighed. He knew Amani was right. He slowly made his was back to the hill, and sat down next to it. Amani gave Vidogo a nod, and raced off towards the Pridelands. Vidogo sighed again, looking down at the ground. He loved his brother, he really did. But he hated how he was always first in everything. Even in getting help, he had to be the first one to do it. Vidogo laid down, and waited for Amani to return, chatting to Uzuri as they waited. Not soon enough, Amani came back with Moto, and as Moto was breaking apart the termite hill, he had some choice words to say to the cubs. “This was a very stupid idea, for all of you. I can understand racing, even climbing up a tree...but a termite hill? That is very dangerous! You're lucky you found me when you did, or Uzuri might have been stuck in there all night!” Amani put his head down, same with Vidogo. Moto shook his head as Uzuri made her way out. “Well, it can't be helped I suppose. Just don't do it again, okay?” he said slowly. Amani and Vidogo nodded, and the four of them made their way back to Pride Rock. “On another note...” Moto started. The cubs looked up at him. “Vidogo, Amani, I want you two to join me on a walk tomorrow morning. There is something I need to discuss with both of you.” Amani excitedly looked over to Vidogo, wondering what it could be. All Vidogo could do was shrug, but somehow he knew, in the back of his mind, that the time had come to learn who was to be king. He looked over at Amani, and he knew in his heart, that it would be him. The next morning, right at sunrise, Moto woke up Amani and Vidogo, and took them out, walking all along the savannah. “Now, you two are both excellent brothers. You two love each other unconditionally, which is why I know that you two will take this well.” Vidogo looked down at the ground, while Amani was looking up at his father. He adored Moto, and always wanted to be just like him. “Amani, your mother, grandfather, grandmother, myself, and your uncle have all discussed this, and we believe that you are ready to begin your training as king.” he said, smiling down at Amani. Amani jumped up excitedly, running around Moto's feet, then he went over to Vidogo, and furrowed his brow. “But dad, what about Vid?” he asked, looking at Moto. Moto smiled at Vidogo as well, and placed a paw on his head. “Vid can be your adviser. He is wise and just as brave as any other lion out there. I know that with you two running the Pridelands, all of the animals will be in good paws.” Amani laughed, pouncing on his brother. Vidogo pretended to play along, but he was upset. He knew that from this day forward, Amani would change, he'd no longer be able to play as much as he did, and Vidogo knew that they would eventually grow apart. Moto picked up Amani with his mouth, and plopped him in front of himself. “Now Amani, I know this is exciting, but it's serious as well. So tomorrow, and from that day on, you will be joining me in my royal duties. Your lessons start right as you wake up.” Amani nodded. Moto looked at Vidogo, and gave him a kiss on the forehead. “Thank you Vidogo for being a great brother. Now, your brother and I have some discussing to do, why don't you go and find your mother and Uzuri?” he said softly, giving a playful wink. “Okay.” Vidogo said. Moto nodded, and went back to Amani. Vidogo gave a sigh, and walked back to Pride Rock, alone and without his big brother. Sitai, Birah and Ruttu were finally in the Pridelands. It was hard trying to sneak in...but luckily that bird of Ysa's was off in the Outlands, doing some business. And the king and queen themselves were always together during their duties, so nobody was really inspecting the borders. The three of them made themselves comfortable in the gorge, finding a good deep hiding spot. Sitai gathered Birah and Ruttu around him, and he spoke to them softly. “Tomorrow, we recreate what happened here years ago. Except it will be our way.” he said, smirking. Birah and Ruttu looked at one another, worryingly. They didn't really want to do this, but they had no choice. They would either be banished from their kingdom, or be killed. And either one was horrible. Nobody liked a rogue lion. Sitai nodded, grinning. “Good. It's settled then. Sleep tight, boys.” Chapter Six The next day, Aru had noticed that Vidogo was feeling a little down, so he had decided to take his grandson out on a nice walk, they went into the gorge, since Aru wanted to tell Vidogo a story that had been taught from generation to generation. He looked down at Vidogo, who was walking along beside him. “Vidogo,” Aru started, his voice smooth and calm. “You know what happened here years ago, don't you?” Vidogo looked up at his grandfather and nodded. Of course he did, any lion living in the Pridelands heard that story multiple times. “Well, Scar was so filled with jealousy that he ended up killing Mufasa, his own brother. Vidogo; it's okay to be a little jealous. But you shouldn't have it take over your life.” Vidogo looked dow nat the ground, then back up at Aru. “But grandpa, Amani isn't going to have any time for me...we won't be able to have fun anymore.” Aru shook his head, and bent down so he could look Vidogo in the eyes. “Do not let that stop you from loving him Vidogo. He's your only brother, and he'll always love you back no matter what. So please, do not let him becoming king get in the way of that love.” Aru paused for a moment, and smiled gently at Vidogo. Vidogo smiled back, his eyes tightly shut. Just then, he heard something strange. Aru heard it as well, and looked back, only to see a stampede of wildebeast coming their way. He pushed Vidogo with his muzzle. “Run Vidogo!!” he shouted. Vidogo's eyes grew wide, and he started to run, making he way to the gorge's edge. He looked back, and saw Aru running as well, with the wildebeast right at his heels. “Vidogo!” Aru shouted again. He ran up towards Vidogo, and grabbed him in his mouth. The wildebeast were surrounding them at that moment, and everything was a blur of dust and the blackness of the wildebeast. Aru managed to find his way out, and jumped up on a ledge, placing Vidogo gently on the side. But just as he was about to climb up himself, he lost his footing, and fell right back into the wildebeast. “Grandpa!!” Vidogo shouted. He looked around, expecting to see his grandfather come leaping out of the stampede. But after a few minutes, and after the stampede had subsided, Vidogo knew the worst had happened. He could make out Aru's silhouette, and carefully approached him. Aru was laying motionless, and Vidogo had tried tugging on his ear. But he wouldn't move. Just as he was about to burst into tears, Sahada came swooping down. “Vidogo! What happened?” she asked, looking at Aru. Vidogo shook his head, tears starting to form in his eyes. “There was a stampede...and we couldn't get out in time...I don't know what happened...” Vidogo said between gulps. Sahada sadly shook her head. “Come on, let's go find the rest of the pride.” she said solemnly. Vidogo followed behind her, and glanced back only once, to see the great king dead. All of the lions had gathered around Pride Rock. Ysa was beside Moto, crying into his shoulder. This was the first time Vidogo had seen his mom cry. Vidogo tried to fight back tears himself. He looked around to see Amani and Uzuri in a corner, their heads down, looking sad themselves. Vidogo walked away from the pride. Nobody was there to comfort him. Usually if he got upset, his grandpa would take him away from Pride Rock for a bit, and they would just walk around and talk. But now Aru was gone, and Vidogo was lonely. Amani couldn't help him, he had to prepare to be king. “Do not let that stop you from loving him, Vidogo.” he could hear his grandpa say. Vidogo shut his eyes and ran off towards the gorge, and looked down. It looked so calm now without the wildebeast. Back at Pride Rock, Moto called Sahada over to him. “Sahada, I want you to inspect the gorge. I want to find out what caused the stampede.” Sahada nodded her head. “Yes, right away sire.” she said before flying off. Moto looked down at Ysa, who was still crying. He put his head on top of hers, and closed his eyes, remembering how good Aru had been to him when he had first come to the Pridelands. If it wasn't for Aru, he and Ysa wouldn't have been together now. Seasons passed, and life had once again returned to normal, more or less. Vidogo and Amani had grown up to be wonderful young lions. Amani was the biggest out of the two, but Vidogo was still quite strong and smart despite their differences. Of course, Amani had been busy with his lessons, but he and Vidogo still had time to talk, because Vidogo remembered what Aru had told him. He had to keep on loving Amani, no matter what. One evening, just as the Pridelands was settling down for the night, Moto had decided to take Amani on a late inspection. “Evil never sleeps.” Moto said. The two of them were at the very edge of the Pridelands, when they had heard rustling coming from the grass. Moto recalled the position he was in several years ago, but he was still cautious. “Who goes there?” he called out. Amani looked up at him, but there was no answer. Readying his claws just in case, Moto stared out into the grass, snarling. Amani did the same, but just as he lowered himself to the ground, a young lioness came out of the long grass, and fell right at his feet. Amani bolted up, startled. “Dad?” he said, that one word asking a million different questions. “Take her back to Pride Rock. Let's get her well again.” Amani nodded, and lifted the lioness onto his back. She was surprisingly light, and with Moto leading the way, Amani felt hopeful that she would recover quickly. Ruttu ran over to Sitai. They were still in the gorge, and even though they had been lucky so far, the three lions felt as though that soon their luck would run out. “Sir! I just heard that a weak lioness has just come into the Pridelands.” Ruttu said. Sitai nodded, smiling. “Good. Perhaps we could use her to our advantage.” he said. Ruttu cocked his head to one side. “Sir?” he asked. Sitai looked over to him. “Think about it. First, they will be preoccupied with getting her well again. If that's the case, we can use this time to attack again. And while she is getting well, she will want to venture out on her own. During which time, we shall make sure that we are there to greet her...and to make sure that the Pridelands falls!” Chapter Seven A week or so later, Amani was showing the lioness around the Pridelands. She told the pride that her name was Upahara, and she seemed to be very polite and soft spoken. Amani was telling her all about his family and the history of the Pridelands. She nodded here and there as she continued to walk beside him. “You're a very good listener Upahara.” Amani said, smiling at her. “Please, call me Upa. That's what everyone back home used to call me.” she said, returning the smile. Amani had a twinkle in his eyes, and he could feel his heart thumping rapidly. He was about to give Upa a nuzzle, but all at once they heard a blood curdling scream coming from the distance. “Come on! Let's go check it out!” Amani said, running towards where he heard the scream. Upa followed close behind him. As they came closer, they saw Nyota there. “Nyota...what is it?” Amani asked. But as he looked down, his own question was answered. Lying in a pool of blood was Vidhi and Zak. Amani's eyes widened with horror. The bodies were barely recognizable. He went over to Nyota, giving her a gentle hug. “When did you come across this?” he asked her softly. “Just now...who could have done this?” she asked, her face looking bewildered. Amani shook his head. “I don't know. Come on, let's go get my mom and dad, they'll know what to do.” Nyota nodded, but before Amani left, he went up to Upa. “Upa, stay here with the bodies. But keep alert, and roar if you see anything.” he whispered to her. She gave a nod, and Amani headed off with Nyota towards Pride Rock. Upa stood there, completely shocked by the sight in front of her. She closed her eyes tightly, the memories of her own cubhood coming back to her. The land she came from had been having a civil war for a while now, and just recently the rebels had taken over. That was why she had to leave. Just then, Upa could hear some noises from the distance. She turned around, trying to examine who was there. But she found it difficult to make out any figures, not with the tall grass around. Just then, three male lions approached her. She knew Amani told her to roar, but she was frozen solid, terrified. She knew that these were the lions that killed Vidhi and Zak. And if she roared, they would surely kill her too. “Ah, what a pity.” Sitai said, looking down at the bodies. He circled around Upa, inspecting her. “My, what a gorgeous lioness. Am I right Birah? Ruttu?” he asked, looking at them. Birah and Ruttu nodded, keeping their stare down. Sitai grinned, coming up towards Upa. “You know, we could use someone like you in our pride.” he said, his voice low. “Why would I want to join you?!” Upa yelled out, her brow furrowing with anger. Sitai laughed, backing away. “Because, if you join us, we can ensure your safety. But if you stay here...well, we can't make any promises.” Upa lowered her gaze, remembering what had happened in her own pride. Sitai walked up to her once more, whispering in her ear. “In a month, my pride will come to take over these lands. If you want to live, you should join us.” Upa nodded, looking up at Sitai. He smiled at her. “Good. I'll give you three weeks to make your decision. We live in the Maja District, it's north-west of here. If you do not show up within three weeks, then I will assume you have chosen death.” Sitai turned to leave, calling Birah and Ruttu. “Come on boys, let's go ready our pride.” A few days later, Amani had decided to show Upa the lovely Oasis just west of the Pridelands. She walked along beside him, his warm side pressing up against hers. The sun had just set, and all around them fireflies started to glow and dance. Some of the first stars came out as well. Upa breathed in the cool air, closing her eyes. But the thought of that run in she had with Sitai just a few days earlier was still fresh in her mind. Finally, they came to a deep pool of water with a glorious waterfall just behind it. Upa's eyes widened. She had never seen anything like this before. “Isn't it great?” Amani asked, looking at the waterfall with her. Upa gave a slight nod. “It's amazing. How did you find out about this place?” she wondered as she laid herself down next to the pond. “My mother showed it to me. It's kind of been passed down for generations.” he said, resting himself beside her. Upa purred softly, leaning herself against him. “I could just stay here forever.” she said with a calm sigh. “Me too.” Amani replied, licking the back of her ears tenderly, waiting for the perfect moment to carefully mount her. A week later, Upa arose before any of the other pride members, including Amani. The sky was still tinged with dark blue. She walked herself over to the water hole, and bent down for a nice, cool drink. She could feel movement within her. Her worst fears had come true. That night with Amani could turn very dangerous, that is if she didn't get herself out of the Pridelands in time. She walked back to Pride Rock slowly, glancing up at the remaining stars that were still shining brightly. She sighed, closing her eyes and laying down for a moment. She didn't want to abandon Amani, he had been nothing but kind to her since she arrived. But she didn't want to endanger herself, or her future cub, either. She got up, stretched her paws in front of her, and walked towards Pride Rock, and continued walking. Chapter Eight Amani was frantically running around the Pride Lands, trying to find Upa. Vidogo decided to help his brother, but it was now getting late out and there was still no sign of her. “Come on Ami, she's gone. Let's go back to Pride Rock okay?” he sighed, turning his back. “No! We're going to find her. Let's check the southern border again.” he shouted, running downward. Vidogo shook his head and caught up with Amani. He could tell that Amani was truly upset and that he knew that Upa was gone for good. “Amani. I know you loved her, but we need to get back.” Vidogo said, starting to lose his cool. Amani shook his head, tears coming out. “No! I need her! I love her!” he shouted into the darkness. Vidogo growled, pouncing on top of Amani. Amani's eyes widened in shock. Never before did Vidogo stand up to him. “Love her?! You only knew her for a month! I'm your brother Amani!! She's gone, and the sooner you realize that, the better.” Vidogo peered into Amani's eyes. Amani turned his head, his paws up near his chest. “B-but I need her.” he sputtered out. “Need her?! I need you! For the past few years I haven't had my brother, and yet I've still supported you. You know what grandpa said before he died? 'He's your only brother, and he'll always love you back no matter what.' But now I'm not so sure of that any more...” Vidogo's voice trailed off. He hopped off of Amani, turning his back to him and putting his head down. He sniffed back a few tears. Amani got up, and slowly walked towards Vidogo, putting his neck around him. “I'm so sorry Vid.” he said quietly. Vidogo buried himself in his brother's mane. “I've really missed you Ami.” Vidogo said. Amani gave a slight nod. “I know.” They stayed together like that for a few minutes, enjoying their first alone time they had since they were cubs. That night, they stayed out in the Pride Lands, and the two brothers comforted each other. Sitai was addressing the pride, everyone was listening intently. Upahara was there as well, it had taken her less time than expected to make it to the Maja District. “We make our way to the Pride Lands tomorrow.” he said, his voice low. “Tomorrow? Sitai, I thought you said it wouldn't be for another week at least.” Freah said, trying to remain calm. She dreaded the thought of having to invade her own granddaughter's pride. But Sitai was so fierce, and he was all that they had. Sitai walked over to her and grinned. “Oh Freah. You and I both know that we aren't getting any younger. And look around, our pride is dwindling. We need more young and able lions.” Freah was about to retort, but decided against it. She backed away slowly, and made her way over to her husband's side. “So that settles it then.” Sitai said, half to himself. “Every single one of you will join us in our fight. I look forward to serving among you all.” Upa exchanged a worried and knowing glance to Freah. She spoke up once more. “Sitai...Upahara is expecting...surely you wouldn't...” Sitai cut her off. “So what? There's more where that came from! And besides, I'd probably kill that little runt anyways. It's not mine and therefore not strong. Now, enough. Everyone rest up for the night, we leave at dawn.” Sitai went off towards the largest tree in the area, and laid himself underneath it. “Freah, Sitai won't really have me fight...will he?” Upa asked softly. All Freah could do was shrug, her frail body giving a big sigh. “I don't know dear. I don't know anymore.” she said solemnly, wandering off. Upa looked up at the stars, her tears starting to stream down her face. She left Amani for a lie...and now she couldn't go back. The next day was pretty normal for Amani. He and Moto did their rounds, and Vidogo stayed in Pride Rock with his mother. “I'm so proud of you boys.” she said, smiling at Vidogo. He was giving her a wash. Lately she had been stricken with a strange sickness, but Huduma said it would pass in no time. Vidogo shared her smile back. Even though most of his parent's time was spent on Amani, Ysa always made sure that Vidogo knew he was loved as well. And, ever since last night, he and Amani had instantly become closer. He couldn't tell the pride of course, it was too controversial, but he and Amani felt it in their hearts. This morning when Amani left with Moto, he gave a warm smile to his brother. The cave was filled with a calm quiet, all of the pride was having their afternoon nap. All at once, Sahada flew in, her wings going nearly a thousand miles a second. “Queen Ysa! Queen Ysa!” she shouted. The pride looked up in alarm. Uzuri stretched out her paws as she gave a yawn. Ysa went up to Sahada and looked up at her. “What is it Sahada?” she asked quietly. “The Maja District pride...they're on their way! They just crossed the northern border!” she said, a frantic shrill ringing out. Vidogo leapt up. “Where's father and Amani?” he asked sternly. “They are making their way over now. But King Moto demanded that all pride members join in, now!!” she shrieked, starting to fly ahead. All of the pride got up and made their way out of Pride Rock. When Vidogo saw Ysa struggling her way out as well, he ran up to her, using his side for support. “Mother, you really shouldn't.” he said calmly. Ysa laughed, looking up at him. She was amazed at how much he had grown in such a short amount of time. He practically towered over her now. “No Vidogo. My place is with my pride. I'll fight too.” she said. Vidogo started to protest, but the determination he saw in his mother comforted him, and he decided to let her have her way. The two of them went down the rock, and struggled to keep up with the rest of the pride. When all of the Pridelanders and all of the Maja District pride were gathered, the two rulers from each side faced off towards one another. Moto had his first speech. “Give up Sitai.” he roared out. “You cannot take the Pride Lands.” Sitai grinned, crouching down low and digging his claws into the dirt below him. A crack of thunder roared across the sky, making all the pride members look up in astonishment. “No. I want this. I want this now!” he roared, leaping forward towards Moto. That's what started the fight. The two prides clashed together, almost looking like one pride. Jinka was fighting in the mix as well. The Pridelanders exceeded the Maja District pride by size, however they had more strength. Both the old and the young were fighting. Everyone wanted to get this over with. For Vidogo, the whole thing was a blur. He kept on slashing at the oncoming lions. Some he recognized, others he didn't. Then, Upahara ran over, and for a minute, they both had a stand off. Vidogo spotted Amani over by Sitai, he was distracted. For a fleeting second, Vidogo almost didn't want to hurt Upahara, but without warning, she came on to him, keeping him on his back. Vidogo struggled for a moment, but flipped her over, sending her flying. He looked back, and saw her lifeless body against a sharp rock. Vidogo breathed in deeply, then turned his back on her, focusing on the rest of the pride. Ysa had perished in the battle, her body was too weak to fight like this. Jinka and Freah passed away as well. Soon, each of the pride was dwindling. Soon, Moto was laying motionless as well. Vidogo looked around him, not quite believing what he saw. The only members left were himself, Amani, Sitai, Uzuri and Ruttu, plus a few other lionesses from the Pridelanders. Amani and Sitai were looking deep into each other's eyes, ready to have one last brawl. This would be it, Vidogo thought, this would determine who would keep the Pride Lands. Just as Amani was about to strike, Sitai dodged him, hurdling himself over towards Vidogo. Vidogo had little time to react, but from somewhere he could hear Amani's voice yell out a loud “Noooo!!” and in an instant, he saw a flash of Amani come between himself and Sitai. Sitai came out on top, ruthlessly slashing and putting his claws into Amani. Vidogo roared out, hot tears burning his face in the pouring rain. “No!!” he yelled, and came at Sitai. Vidogo blacked out then, and just kept on biting, punching, doing all that he could just to get rid of Sitai. It must have been short, because soon Uzuri was over at Vidogo's side, pulling him off a lifeless Sitai. “Vidogo! Stop! It's over.” she said, trying to calm him down. Vidogo looked back at Amani, whose bloodied body was laying in puddle of water. Vidogo felt his tears come faster, and he yelled out to his brother. “Amani!!” he shouted. “Amani!!!” but he was being carried back toward Pride Rock by Uzuri and Ruttu, and, all at once, the world went pitch black, and the next thing Vidogo remembered was being splashed with water by Huduma. Chapter Nine Vidogo was in Pride Rock, it was a few months later, and all of the pride held a private coronation ceremony for him. They had begun to grow again, Ruttu and Uzuri were mated, despite their age difference. Uzuri was pregnant, and Huduma assumed that she would give birth in another week or so. “Now, onto you. You will need a mate yourself.” he said to Vidogo, giving a small smile. Vidogo shook his head. “Oh, it doesn't have to be right now of course.” Huduma said, patting Vidogo's shoulder. “No, I mean, I don't want a mate, ever.” he said, his voice low. Huduma looked puzzled. “I want Uzuri's cub to take on the thrown when I die.” Vidogo said, looking over at Uzuri who gave him a reassuring grin. “But then that means...” Huduma began. Vidogo nodded. “Yes, that means the end of my dynasty is over.” everyone looked at Vidogo, their silence speaking volumes. Vidogo turned away from his pride then, and went over to the edge of Pride Rock. He stared up at the stars, thinking of all the great kings. He would be the last of them, and soon a new era would begin in the Pride Lands. But he knew in his heart that he could never love again, for his love was with Amani. Vidogo felt a cool wind blow through him, and some small feathers danced overhead. Instantly, he knew that Amani was in the stars as well, and would guide him until his dying day. THE END
