Evolution At It’s Finest “Have you heard about the attacks? I mean there are more and more of them popping up.” The female panther said as she leaned against the counter. “Who the hell hasn’t, I mean it’s in the newspaper just about everyday.” A female opossum said shaking her head a little and waving her hand as if brushing off the severity of the situation. “You don’t watch the news do you?” The pantheress asked, cocking an eyebrow at her coworker. “You haven’t heard how bad the attacks were, have you?” “Nope, I don’t watch the news….or all that much TV.” She said shaking her head. “There is nothing worth watching, and the news is always depressing.” “You know you might learn something from the news….better than learning from video games.” The panthress said snickering. “Yeah, I might, but I’m still not going to watch the news.” The opossum said as she fiddled with the strings of her apron, working on the knot tied in the front, just under her cleavage. “Lilly, just be careful.” The black furred cat said as she put a hand on the shoulder of the opossum. “I don’t want anything happening to you.” “Thanks Jackie, I will.” She said smiling as she got the knot undone and took her apron off, setting it to the side before walking off and making her way to the computer that her and the other employees used to clock in and out. She keyed in her log in info and clicked through the screens to get to the one that she needed, clicking on the clock out button and then the logout button before picking up her bag and making her way back through the kitchen, grabbing and slipping on her jacket and stuffing her apron into her bag and making for the door. Stepping through the door the young opossum was hit with a wall of cold air. Over the past few days it was looking more and more like fall had been skipped over and winter was here. Pulling her jacket closed as she started walking a little faster, whisper of smoke swirling from her muzzle as she exhaled. It was nights like this that she hated having to walk home. It wasn’t the fact that it was late at night and nearly pitch black outside, save for the few street lights that dimly dotted the side of the road, it was the cold, it was always the cold that she hated the most. The fact that parts of her body lacked the thicker coat of fur surely didn’t help. The one saving grace was that she didn’t live but about ten minutes away from her work place. She was about halfway home when she pulled out her phone and glanced at the clock, it was after midnight, she ended up having to work later than she had wanted to, but when she had to work with that she had to, she expected as much. She didn’t hate her co workers, she just didn’t like the way that they would act, they let rumors and drama get the better of them, most, if not all of the time. It had gotten to the point that she would go into work and just do her job and try not to talk any more than she had to. She did this for a number of reasons, one of them being the fact that she would get drug into drama and other idiocy without having anything to do with it. On more than one occasion she had her name dropped for something that happened on one of her days off. As she slipped her phone back into her pocket, something, or some sound caught her attention. Mind you she wasn’t easily scared by little sounds, she wasn’t one of those opossums that would hit the ground at the drop of a hat, she had been walking home like this for almost two years now, she had become accustomed to the sounds, though something about this one seemed a little off. It was something like a shuffling sound, akin to someone walking, but dragging one foot, kind of like some wounded animal. Wild animals were something else that she was used to hearing and seeing, well more like escaped dogs and cats, maybe a few of them that were homeless, she had seen a few raccoons on her trips home. Soon she entered the stretch of her walk home where there were no homes, just long stretches of wood lands on one side and a large grassy field on the other. Both of them she had spent many a year growing up, exploring. The forest on the right side of the road that she was walking, filled with countless trees, a small river and a nice open clearing. The clearing in the middle of the woods, or at least she thought it was the middle had been the sight of many camping trips for her and her friends, a place for her and some friends to try smoking and pot, the things that teens did, it was even the site of where she lost her virginity. The grassy field to the left side of the road, she hadn’t explored it as much growing up, to her and her friends, there just wasn’t all that much there to look at. In the summer the grass was nearly as tall as they were, which is why it played host to many games of hide and seek over the years, and a few times during one of these games her or one of her friend’s nearly had a hazardous run in with one of the local snakes. Though most of them were harmless, hell they had caught a few of them and kept them as pet, the area also housed a number of poisonous ones, namely the water moccasin and the cotton head. Other than that, they had never found anything there, even with the rumors of hidden treasures and talk of dead bodies being hidden there it, it didn’t hold interest. Something caught the opossum’s attention as she looked out over the field, she thought that she could see a patch of the tall grassing moving. One spot that wasn’t swaying in time with the rest, it almost looked like something was making it’s way through the grass. She did have to remind herself that animals did make their ways through the area, along with a few of the people that lived around here, she was reminded of the time that one of her neighbors were walking through the field looking for a run away pet. She just shook her head as she reached into her back pocket, pulling a small metal cylinder from it, grasping it tight as she started walking a little faster. It was like whatever was in the field could sense that she was getting worried. Her broad ears swiveling and turning to pick up every little sound, the rustling getting louder as it got closer. It was that same….dragging sound, like someone dragging their foot as they walked, though it seemed to be moving faster and she wasn’t sure if it was or if it was just in her head, she wasn’t sure if she needed to just start running for her house, call the cops or an ambulance or what. She knew that she was just about to the safety of her street, she knew that if she could make it there that she would be in the safety of street lights and the fact that all she had to do was scream and one of her neighbors would be outside and investigating what was happening, one of the joys of living in a small, tight knit group. It was then that something told her to turn back and look, something in the back of her mind told her to turn and see where it was, that it was just a dog, she didn’t want to turn back and look. The sound turned from the rustling to the sound of someone walking on the asphalt of the road with her. Listening to the sound of it’s movement, it took just a few seconds for it to hit her, that whatever it was, it wasn’t an animal. Click…….scrape…...click…..scrape…… The voice in the back of her head finally got the better of her and she had to turn and look at just what was making the sound. It could have been someone that needed help, it could have been someone that had fell and broken their leg, there had been a time or two that she was walking along the road and found someone that had been riding a four-wheeler and crashed it and gotten hurt. That’s what the voice in the back of her head said that it was, that they were just too scared to call out, but turning to face it, she wasn’t ready for the sight that greeted her. "Any little detail that you can think of will be helpful." The officer said as he sat in a chair next to the sobbing opossum. "Cloths, size, tail length, hell a smell would help." "Like I said, when I turned around, he was behind me and then the next thing I know he was on top of me." She said shivering as the doctor finished looking her over. "His face was.....pale and boney looking. I think that he was wearing some kind of mask or something....He....he was some kind of canine.....I think a fox. And the smell…..it was kinda like...the strongest musk that I had ever smelt." "Ok, see now that's helpful." He said turning to look at the doctor before leaning in and whispering something to him, getting a nod out of him. "Anything else? Age?" "He had to be about my age, give or take a few years." She said shivering again, now wrapping herself into the thin sheet that the doctor had given her. "He pinned me down....and just tore through my pants....I don't know if her had a knife or what, but he ripped through them like it was nothing." "Did he say anything to you? Did he chase you?" The office said jotting down some things onto a small note pad. "No, he didn't say anything.....he just grunted and groaned....it sounded.....inhuman...." She shook her head. "I don't think that he did, the moment that I could I ran like hell. I remember him pressing his knot against me....I swear that he was going to blow into me, but I managed to slip out of his grip." "Well, even if he didn't cum inside of you, it looks like we have all the DNA evidence that we need." He said motioning to the bite wound on the opossum's shoulder. As if on a timer the doctor came back in and nodded to the officer. "The doctor here is going to check you more in depth....and gather any samples that he can....so just bear with him, and it will be over in just a little." He said turning and heading out of the room, leaving to opossum and the doctor to their work. Once outside he had something bigger to attend to, he had to tell the mother opossum and Lilly's sister what was happening and what he had planed. “I hate having to do this, and I know that you really don’t want this, but it needs to be done. It’s going to sting….if not right out hurt.” The doctor said as he guided the opossum’s legs up into the stirrups. “I will make this as fast as I can and hurt as little as I can.” Lilly let out hisses and whimpers as she felt the doctor going to work, she didn’t know what he was doing but it hurt like hell. “Fuck……” She hissed out as she clinged to the sheets, threatening to tear holes in them. She wasn’t sure what hurt more, the male that had gotten ahold of her or what the doctor was doing. It had felt like ages before he had stopped and help Lilly get her legs out of the stirrups. “I’m sorry….I hate having to do that.” He said walking over to a table and putting verse swabs and the like into little containers. “Though I do have good news about all that, there is no major damage….though you are going to be walking funny.” He said as he set about looking at the bite wound on her shoulder, taking more samples there before getting it cleaned up and bandaged. “What about knowing if that fucker gave me something?” She paused for a moment. “Or if I’m knocked up…..Though like I said, I don’t think that he came in me.” “Well, we are waiting on the blood work to come back on all that. We will know about the SDI and SDTs with in an hour or two at the most, thought the HIV will take a little longer.” He said wheeling the cart to the door. “And as for the getting pregnant, we will be giving you something for that to….and don’t worry, it’s just the morning after pill.” He said opening the door and pushing the cart out, the moment that he was out the door the mother opossum and little sister came rushing into the room, it was clear that the two had been crying. “Lilly sweetie, I’m so glad that you’re ok.” The mother opossum said as she rushed up to her older daughter, hugging her tight. “You had me so worried.” “I’m…..ok.” Lilly said holding her mother, smiling a little as she felt her sister joining in on the hug. “From what the doctor said there is no permanent damage or anything like that.” She said letting out a little sigh. “I know that this has to be hard to talk about and all, and I’m not going to push you about it or anything, but just remember that I am here for you.” She said pulling back from the hug and looking her girl in the eyes. “And not matter what…..everything will be ok.” “Thank you mom.” Lilly said smiling warmly at her mom. “I….I don’t want to talk about it right now, I just want to rest….I’m really tired.” The opossum said with a little yawn. “You should get some rest….you have been through a lot today.” The mother said before going over to the seat in the corner of the room and taking a seat, the little sister rushing over with the mom and taking a seat in her lap. “I will be right here.” Letting out another little yawn, the opossum closed her eyes, letting her mind wandered a little before finally falling asleep. She shivered as she did, reliving the memories of what happened just hours ago. The memories of the even invaded her dreams, taking on a darker twist in the malleable world that is her dreams. She could see the thing that came after her, the monster that attacked her, and it was just that, a sex starved demon, that wanted one thing from her. She ran from it, though no matter how fast she ran, hard she ran, the thing was just a step or two behind her, reaching out to grab her. She didn’t know how long she ran before she felt it reaching out and the clawed hand resting on her shoulder. She could feel claws digging into her shoulder, and a strength holding her in place as she felt another clawed hand grabbing her other shoulder. In a flash, the thing had spun her in place and she was now looking into the dead, hollow eyes of the thing that attacked her. The thing was like something out of a monster movie, a skeletal face of a canine, large fangs jutting out of the sides of the long muzzle, that opened up to show off more of it’s teeth. In a flash the thing leaned in and started to tear at the opossum’s throat. Jerking up in her bed, she gasped out as she looked around the room, her mother and sister sitting up in the chair looking at her just as surprised. There was a moment or two of silence, just the ambient sounds of the hospital around them filling the room. “Sweetie, are you ok? Was it a nightmare?” Her mother asked her, before her daughter had a chance to answer, there was a knock at the door, a moment later, the doctor slipping into the room and stopping at the foot of the bed. “Nightmares and things like that might be a common occurrence, given how traumatic things have been.” The doctor said as she lifted up a clipboard and looked at the papers on it. “Well I do have some good news for you. Your clean in terms of any STDs or STIs, and it should be about a week and we will know about the HIV, AIDs test.” He said as he walked over to the mother. “She can go home, I think that it would be best for her to do so, I’m sure that it’s a lot more peaceful there.” He said as he pulled a few papers from the clipboard and handed them to her. “This is just something to help with the pain, and then something to make sure that the bite doesn’t get infected or anything like.” He said holding out the bored for her to sign before turning back and starting out the door. “A nurse will be by in a moment with a wheelchair.” He said as he slipped out of the room leaving them alone. “Well it looks like you will get a little rest from work.” The mother said holding up one of the papers that the doctor had given her. “Two week, to give your shoulder time to get better.” “So two weeks of laying around the house trying to forget…..great.” Lilly said with a huff as she swung her legs over the edge of the bed. “Well you know that he’s...or I will get you an appoint with a shrink or someone to talk to.” The mother said as the youngest daughter got up and stretched a little. “That and I’m here if you ever need me….that and you will have your games and all that, I mean you just got that new computer.” “True.” Lilly said with a little meep as she felt her little sister putting her hands on her knees. “And I’m here for you too big sister.” Rose said smiling up to her sister. “I will be your nurse and take good care of you and all that.” “Well it looks like I’m going to be well taken care of.” Lilly said as she kneeled down and wrapped her arms around her sister. About that time, there was a knock at the door before it opened and a nurse pushing a wheelchair came in. “Ready to go home?” The nurse asked as she watched the opossum limping over to the chair and sitting in it. “Come on squirt. Ride with me while mom goes and gets the car.” Lilly said patting her lap, letting out a little squeak as she felt the seven year old cub climbing into her lap, as the nurse started pulling her out of the room and then starting to push her through the hospital. Out at the fount of the hospital the mother was waiting for them, with a little help from the nurse Lilly got into the front seat, her sister getting into the back. Lindsey started pulling out of the driveway of the hospital, stopping at the end of the short road. “Is there anything that you want before we go home?” The mother as she pulled out onto the highway. “We have some junk food and stuff at home, and as soon as the pharmacy opens up I will take the prescriptions to be filled, I know that your shoulder has to be hurting.” “I’m good.” Lilly said with another yawn. “I just want to go home, get out of these clothes and into my bed and sleep some…..and hopefully without the nightmares and stuff.” “Just remember, I’m here for you, no matter when you need me, I will come running.” She said as she kept driving down the road heading home.
