Originally hailing from Reskarn (proto-Torikan, lit. "shelter-holy"), the torikan are a species of mesocarnivores of felid descent. ## Homeworld Reskarn is a small, unusually dense garden world, with a radius of 0.835× earth and a mass of ~0.65× earth. It circles its G0V class sun at a distance of 1.35 AU, each orbit lasting about 1.51 years. It possesses two major moons, both under five hundred km in radius, and neither contributing much in the way of tides. Ocean coverage is modest. ## Anatomy Like most vertebrates native to Reskarn, the torikan have a hexapedal body plan, and like most members of their clade, the two anterior pairs pull double duty as locomotive and manipulative appendages. They are compact and sturdy, averaging 1.07 metres from nose to rear, with another 0.61 metres of tail, and have an average mass of 20 kilograms. Their fur is thick and somewhat shaggy, built for warmth in their cold native environment. It's spotted to help camouflage them, both to aid in hunting small game and evading predators. It's especially thick around the neck, forming a distinct ruff. They also possess a short, narrow mane running from the top of their skull to the base of their tail, used in emotional signalling and mating displays. The face is still distinctly pantherine, its broadness somewhat accentuated by thickened fur along the cheeks. This is mostly external, however. The teeth within are more generalized than their terran ancestors, having traded in specialization in tearing flesh for breadth of diet. ## Reproduction Torikan possess an estrus cycle, with roughly two to three fertile periods spread across late winter to early summer. A typical succesful pregnancy takes about four months and yields two or three offspring who are capable of walking within two months of birth. ## Diet A healthy diet for a torikan is at least fifty percent animal protein; the source of this varies heavily depending on culture, but is typically small animals, with larger prey making up single digit percentages. The remaining portion of their diet is tubers, nuts, and berries with small amounts of fungi. ## Baseline Psychology Torikan are, when compared to most other mammalian Concordance members, notably unusual. The average torikan begins exhibiting signs of stress within a day when isolated from others, and will not willingly self-isolate except in dire circumstances. Their ability to form deep skillsets but lack of ability to form broad ones is a knock-on effect to this, leading to almost all primarily torikan-populated cultures making clear distinctions between "person" and "individual organism."
