The following is a summary of the finale of Whisper in the Evershade: The story starts with Matthew arriving at work and going about his daily routines, thinking about all that had happened up to this point and what he would be doing later that night- which is taking Sammie’s virginity. He’s nervous about it but knew that he shouldn’t be. Whisper would be there with them and if he started to go a little too crazy, she’d stop him. Meanwhile Cornelius is invited into the house by Sammie and the two sit down with coffee and talk for a bit. Cornelius hides his identity as best he can and Sammie seems to accept that, choosing rather to talk about mundane things. The two of them seem to make a fast connection and Cornelius, for a time, forgets that he’s a wanted man. Whisper returns home to see the two of them holding hands through the window. Immediately she phones Matthew about it and goes inside to protect her daughter from what she perceives to be a threat. Matthew immediately leaves work and speeds his way back to the house. In the heat of the moment, the two of them forget to call the police. Inside, Whisper is surprised by how calm the two of them are and how friendly Cornelius is and Sammie is surprised when Whisper reveals who the shark is but doesn’t pull away or show fear/disgust. Cornelius does get a little angry though, that Whisper gave him away, but when Sammie’s hand tightens on his, he calms right back down. At this point, Matthew has sped all the way home, with several cops tailing him. The blaring sirens freak out Cornelius and not even Sammie’s calming touch can soothe him. He rushes from the room just before Matthew comes in and grabs a kitchen knife, only to see Matthew burst in the door. The two scuffle a little but Sammie manages to convince the two to stop. However, it is already too late. While the knife was lost in the scuffle, Matthew’s heart arrhythmia kicks in and he begins to have a heart attack. With the police arriving outside, Cornelius finds himself between a rock and a hard place. Sammie is begging him to save Matthew but his instincts to run are so strong. Eventually his conscience kicks in- something he’d thought he’d lost after all that time in jail- and he begins to perform CPR on the now unconscious Matthew. Though he is only doing it for a few minutes, he does manage to save Matthew before the police burst into the house. Seeing Matthew on the floor and whisper and Sammie crying, the first officer on the scene misunderstands and fires upon Cornelius, killing the shark. The scene ends there. The next scene we see is inside Matthew’s hospital room where he is currently unconscious. He has a few broken ribs from the CPR but is otherwise okay… however he has not woken back up since his heartattack. Whisper and Sammie are in the room, the tiger girl holding her boyfriend’s hand, silently begging him to wake up. Matthew, in spirit form, stands next to his bed, watching this while wondering why he hasn’t passed on. Though his life was great there at the end, his will to live on is weaker than his desire to not. It is at this point that Dilbertdog’s fursona appears (also in spirit form) and begins to convince Matthew to return to his body and live on. Meanwhile, Matthew’s “Parents” arrive on the scene and begin to bitch about the hospital fees and their ruined vacation- finally proving in their own words that they are not even Matthew’s real parents but his uncle and aunt. His real parents had died when he was too young to remember them. This is ultimately what manages to convince Matthew to return to his body- ironically- and he does so. When he opens his eyes, the first thing he does is tell the two of them to fuck right the hell off and to stay out of his life forever. He doesn’t need them, nor does he want them around. They get angry but at this point is when Zaadin- Matthew’s boss- arrives. The lion explains that the company’s health insurance polices would fully cover not only Matthew’s current treatment but also future treatments to cure his heart arrhythmia, aka installing a pace maker inside his chest. This pacifies the two fake parents and they leave. Whisper by this point recovers from the shock of Matthew waking and telling off his uncle and aunt, and tosses herself upon him, crying as she clings to him. Sammie also cries but there is this nagging feeling in the back of her mind and she eventually excuses herself and steps out into the hall. While she is still blind, she uses a hand to touch the wall while she walks a little ways away before stopping in front of this familiar presence. Waiting for her there is Cornelius, gifted with a new body for his actions in saving Matthew. He’s now a gecko named Maximilian with a clean slate and new identity. The two embrace and it is strongly suggested the two would be together from then on. It is then that Zaadin sends the others out of the room, leaving only himself and Matthew in the room. After closing the door, Dilbertdog’s fursona reveals himself as well as the loli frog girl Katarina from the story “What Love Is”. While Dilbertdog and Zaadin stand there quietly, Katarina reveals that she has been watching over Matthew since he first met Whisper as per orders of the ‘Higher Ups’. She explains that everything that has happened to him between then and now, as well as the things that have happened to Whisper and Sammie have all been for the sake of that one choice of Cornelius’s. Matthew obviously gets mad at this but she calms him forcefully with a few words and goes on to say “This world is bigger than just you. Everything that happens is for a reason. This particular reason was for Cornelius’s sake. He chose to save you, but even if he’d chosen to run, you would have been just fine. It was his point of redemption, and I personally am glad that he chose the right path. Next time, it may be your turn… and if or when that time comes, I hope you too chose to do the right thing.” She then glares at him intensely before poofing along with Dilbertdog. From that point, Zaadin speaks up and fills in the blanks. “If Cornelius had chosen to run, he would have still died, and the first officer on the scene would have been the one to save you. The only thing that would have been different is that Cornelius would have been damned for his choice rather than rewarded with a new life and a clean slate.” “How do you know all of this?” Matthew would have asked and Zaadin would have just smiled and replied that he’d see him at work when he recovered. It would be then that Zaadin would have left. The story would then skip ahead a few months and shown a double wedding between Matthew and Whisper and Cornelius/Maximillian and Sammie. After they said their “I do’s” is when the story would end.
