Geographic Range:
Eastasian woods from Amur up to the northers Indochina, western border not exactly known, in japan (except Riukiu-Isle), not in Taiwan and Hainan.
1934 introduced into the european parts of Russia, 1960 seen in the Karelia-Area (Kola-half-isle), Archangelsk wood-tundra along the Petschora. Southern down to the Black- and Asow-See, eastern along the Ural till Orenburg, to the Wolga and south to the Kaspisee, western to Poland and Germany.
Still settling in further western and northern territories(1960)
An introduction in Middle-Asia and Kasachstan created small groups but no single population.

Habitat:
Not in the open countryside but in loose woods, wet river-valleys at sees and flooding-areas. (So, only wet-habitats) Only the dens are digged at dry places.
